A frame ball joint?

Forgot to mention, but I've had it up on a 4 poster ramp and I was unable to see or feel any wear or play in the A frame ball joint, the prop UJ's or any other suspension bushes.

I started with one piece drive shafts, then greased the propshafts, then replaced the a frame ball joint with an adjustable one. Changed the axle, gearbox and transfer box oils. Also new rear shocks and bushes. Each bit got rid of some of the knock and I can live with what is left.
Final fix will be a cluth and output shaft, but need to save up first!!!! 2009 Defender 90 CSW 2.4 TDCI. Ex Army Mechanic still living the dream. |

To be honest, I'm going to replace the output shaft (swaying towards the Ashcroft version) and the clutch as a matter of hopefuly eliminating the issue.
Just hoping someone would say that they have had the noise similar to what I described. My mate laughed at me today and said I'm being fussy?? Maybe....... It's a 160 mile commute to my office and I'd rather eliminate the issue before I'm stranded on the M40 |

front drive flanges are always a source of play. they seem to be dry fit on late pumas

The front drive flanges seem okay, I checked them when I replaced the rear half shafts.
To be honest, I don't actually feel any play, it's just the noise I'm hearing which is definitely gearbox and the rear diff area. I'm sure 95% people wouldn't notice it, but I don't think it's right. I have a track day toy which runs a straight cut Quaife gearbox and that makes all weired and wonderful noises, and whilst 95% people would say its knackered , I know it's fine. I could be worrying unnecessarily, but I like to solve these things before it becomes a real issue. |

I had the slight clonking (hardly any feel to it though) at relatively low mileage and had the MT82 Upgraded Output shaft kit from Ashcroft fitted which provides the new shaft with wet lubrication. Although the clonk wasn’t a major problem it’s so much nicer now as there is no drive uptake noise at all. Well worth it

That reassuring to hear, I've made my mind up to replace it regardless of the condition of mine.
I wonder if some people don't hear the early warning sounds/noises and by the time the noise becomes more apparent its a ticking time bomb?? My mate who came to Stoneleigh yesterday kept laughing as he said it feels like a Rolls Royce inside and that I'm being fussy, but he is used to Landys that he completes trials in, so they all had a hammering and all make some horrendous noises which seem normal to him Ashcroft will be receiving an order tonight! |

One of the challenges is going to be holding the cup in a static position when you torque the big bolt, as the Ashcroft cup does not have the slots cut into it to use a specific LR or makeshift tool to hold the cup static while you apply the torque to the cup bolt.

All sorted, and soooooo much nicer to drive!

I did wonder that?
Last week I was still a little nervous after selling my TD5 which still felt like the engine/transmission was the better combination. However my 30mile drive back from my mates workshop today highlighted that I'm heading in the right direction to getting this one sorted. TD5 vs TDCi are like chalk and cheese. Remap next! |
