Tub to side seal

Hello folks,
Following on from my earlier post about the side windows I've got another related two part question;

1). I'm looking to replace the 'Tub to sides' seal on my 3 door van. Having a look at what's available and there's narrow foam strips for the ridiculous price of £40 (ish). These look to be what I have fitted currently. Then there's the YRM offering which looks perfect. I've had a few bits from YRM and they have been very good but I cannot/will not pay over £170 for two foam strips.... 😢. Does anyone know of a suitable alternative..???

2). When I do finally get some seals and the time comes to fit them is there enough 'flex' at the top of the windscreen frame to allow the hardtop to be lifted enough to fit the seal...?? ie undo all of the tub to sides fixings, drop the headlining (again 😡 I might just refit the

with Velcro) and then lift. The Hardtop pivoting at the front edge of the roof/windscreen.

Has anyone got any thoughts on either the types of seal available or how high I'll have to lift the sides..??

I have had seals replaced on previous defenders I bought new whilst under warranty as they leaked badly. They leaked again very quickly. I have now masked and sealed the gap on my current defender using black ebt+. It’s not only water tight it actually looks better and was £10 to do. The same sealant also did across under the windscreen, four door seals and the ends of all four outside window scrapers. Careful masking to ensure it looks good is essential

I fitted oe Land Rover seals. I still covered them with Tiger Seal to make sure they sealed. In future I would use a foam and rely on the PU sealer.

I think I'll have a go at temporary sealing with some mastic type stuff (masking tape is a good shout - I know I'll get the stuff everywhere...😄).
Then, maybe in the Spring time I'll change the seals. That'll give me plenty of time to research (Google 😄) possible sealing materials and I'll report back on here..👍👍

I'd agree that the YRM stuff is pricey, but it's really well made. I used these with a friend's 'restoration' earlier this year. I wasn't paying for it so I have to say I didn't realise they were just as expensive as that.

These weren't available when I did my car eons ago, so I did just use strips of tape and tiger seal.

That’s a really neat job Si - thanks for sharing.

I’ve got a tube of black ebt+ in the garage and am now thinking of doing the same as my original foam is past its best. I’ve got some corrosion around the corner ‘bobbin’ fixing, so I’ll sort that out first. I’ve been giving the seams/gaps a good clean and brushing with Dinitrol RC800 I had knocking about. Inside and out. Your gaps are more parallel than mine, so mine will need a fair bit of masking and might not look as good against the silver, but hey ho.

Good call on the door seal too. I’ve got a new SP door I’m in the process of building up ready to swap and it crossed my mind to add some ebt+ at either end.

Do it on a warmer day and leave the doors open after doing until it’s dry. If you close them the pressure can act like a pump and put lumps in the sealant facing outwards
Or open a window before closing all the doors

That's some serious inspiration right there Gents....

A tube of black ebt for the sides (and hopefully get it somewhere near as good as Si..) and a tube of white for the roof (as per Donalds post).. I was getting a leak from the side-to-side roof join but squirted some of that Captain Birdseye Crack Goo in there which has sorted it but I'm not sure how long that stuff lasts...

Quite a lot of jobs that will have to wait until the temperature improves in order to get the best results.

Or otherwise I’ll have to bite the bullet and clear out the garage to make room…
