I just purchased a Garmin Inreach Mini2. It uses satellites to send/receive text messages for when you're in remote areas without cell phone coverage. You can send messages using just the device but as it does not have a keyboard, it's rather painful entering the text. There's a matching app for iOS/Android which provides a much better user interface.

As well messaging, it can send regular position beacons to Map Share that provides a global map with a dot on it for friends and family to see where you are.

Finally there's an SOS function for emergencies when a central 24/7 call centre will organise your rescue.

Only used it on a test run so far but I'm really impressed with the little device and its capabilities. Hopefully I'll never need the SOS function but sending "I'm OK" messages to the family when I'm off grid will be great.

That's cool. I'll get a couple for my daughter's road trip and for my gravel riding. Gives peace of mind. Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy.

I'd like to but need shoulder surgery so only short rides. I might pop down and have a look though.

Are you doing it? Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy.
