Rear end loud bang when pulling away.
Just noticed a loud bang at the rear when pulling away in my 90. If I pull away more slowly all is fine it happens when pulling away faster from standstill and the noise seems to come from the passenger side rear. It’s like something slips then catches and bangs into place if you know what I mean. Just got back off holiday towing a caravan 800 miles but there was nothing at all when away and I’ve only done about 20 mile since getting home. Is it diff or prop related ?
I know the A frame ball joint is a bit worn and the triangular bushes are also worn. To further explain the noise it’s like banging your hand hard on the rear floor and it feels like a split second slip before take up.
Any ideas please ?

Check the obvious stuff first: spare wheel nuts, brake pads, remaining log in the load space...

Then move on to the bushes and ball joints.

Check rear halfshafts and flanges, they wear, easy to check and remove and replace.

Thanks I’ll check the half shafts and flanges, just thought it could be something else as the noise has just suddenly appeared and not been progressive.

Is there slack in the driveline? If so, check the rear UJ joints after you've checked the half shafts.

Obviously, take the handbrake off to unlock the rear propshaft before checking for play.

Id suggest prop UJ, or rear A frame, but as you’ve already said A frame ball joint is warn, then I’d sort that.

So I’ve checked the halfshafts and flanges and there’s quite a bit of play. Going to get a pair ordered (not sure yet which ones) and see if that’s the cure.

Just bite the bullet and order 1 piece shafts. You’ll be amazed at the difference. Going from a worn 2 piece to a solid 1 piece. 2008 2.4 110 Utility XS.

You can get them cheaper but I have the LOF ones and very happy with them. Don’t forget to get some spare gaskets, they are very cheap and available from lots of places on line.

The half shafts and flanges sound like they need changing, but as advised if your A frame ball joint is worn then do that as well. Buy the complete unit with fulcrum and new bolts off Gwyn Lewis. Cut down a 30mm impact socket and with an impact wrench you should be able to get it off.

I was fortunate with mine, I sprayed some plus gas on the falcrum nuts, and ball joint nut. Held the fulcrum bolt with a spanner and used the Milwaukee 1/2 inch impact driver on a low setting and the nuts just spun off, gave the bolts a gentle tap with a hammer and they popped out. Put them back in, fitted the cut down 30mm socket on the ball joint nut, used an extension bar and impact UJ and the nut just span off and the ball joint popped off the axle mounting. All this was something of a surprise as many have had issues with nuts, bolts, ball joint nut and getting ball joint to release from axle.

I’ve just been to a local specialist dealer and picked these up, I’ll get them on in the next couple of days and see what’s next to do.
I was wondering if the shafts need to be greased a bit more, they already have a very light coating.

Typical Britpart, bound to be defective in some way. Twisted Evil

I would recommend that you obtain a set of hex socket head bolts (what people irritatingly persist in referring to as "Allen bolts") and replace the hex bolts with these. It will also reduce the risk of damage to your wheels from the corners of the bolt heads.

Hex socket head caps are generally grade 10.9 by default so you should have no issues. My memory tells me that they are M10 x 65mm, but check this before buying.

If nothing else you have proved that the Britpart shafts don't come for the same factory as genuine LR parts, since on the genuine shafts you can, if you want, use normal hex heads without problems.

Been for a drive and the rear end noise has gone, but then all of a sudden metal on metal sound and complete loss of drive. The noise now seems to be from the transfer box when I let the clutch out and it won’t drive at all in low or high. Managed to get a tow home, kicked it and went in the house. I think it’s off to a garage next to get sorted, probably an output shaft or maybe a new box but that’s all a bit beyond me. Happy Days. Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry
