Diesel filters
We are getting through diesel filters at a rate of knots! Always used genuine but we go through 6 a year due to the quality of fuel in certain parts of Africa.

At £50 a pop it’s not cheap! What’s everyone using & are they the same filtration? If it’s a case of only use genuine that’s what I’ll do.

Use genuine oil filters as they’re £15.50 each to buy in bulk & we are running a Nugget stuff Airbox so running a Mahle LX830 air filters in that.

Just had to run diesel cleaner through after Angola & the filter lasted 3k due to poor fuel!

If you have a look at https://www.autoteiledirekt.de/oenumber/wji500040.html you can identifiy prices and manufacture for that filter. I personally would not worry buying a cheap filter, but my fuel-quality ist premium. I use the MAHLE KC 204 which is half the price of genuine.

I normally ask the locals when they change theirs ( I’m on the Angolan & Namibian landrover groups) but with ours you can feel it ( power is down & big hills are more of an issue) call me crazy but when I change the filter out it runs much better.

Also runs hotter, again might be me but changing the filter helps.

I use MAHLE. Drain it every now and then to check for water, but I suppose it all comes down to the quality of the fuel. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I change the filter twice a year. Before winter -due to two frozen diesel lines in the past- and in spring.
Maybe it's overdone but it's only max 20 Euro each and I feel much better so:-)

The 2007 110 has reached 250k km on the clock, motor still sounds great, AGR is absolutly clean due to digital driver Laughing

Personally, if I was in an environment where the fuel is routinely contaminated/dirty, I would stick with genuine filters if you can stomach the cost. They are clearly working well for you. The problem is, it's hard to know if an aftermarket filter meets the same standard for filtration as LR intended. If you can find the published micron ratings that would give some confidence. Being in the UK, I'm happy to use any of the name brands (Purflux, Mann, UFI etc), but it's not so critical here. For info, the filter head itself on the car is made by Purflux, so maybe their filters are a good match, but you'd need to check.

Have you considered a secondary fuel filter system like is popular in Australia? That could give you some piece of mind that if anything gets past the standard one it will be caught further down the line. That secondary one should last much longer as the fuel should be largely clean by the time it gets there.

I do like the look of the secondary fuel filter, if available I’d buy one of those but where & how you would put it in a pumas fuel line would be interesting.

I’ve gone for the Mahle fuel filters ( 5 micron) after asking some of the Namibian guys I know who do Angola & up the east coast regularly. Time will tell I suppose.

Am running a second Racor filter in a 2.2 Puma and it works beautifully. Also in an area where fuel can get dodgy (East Africa)

Can take pics of it if interested

You can get it from South Africa with the required fittings

I've always fancied the idea of installing a second filter down the line from the factory filter with a system priming assembly. Very handy for the 2.4 owners as they will no loner need a specific tool just to prime the fuel system.

For those with a 2.2, this shouldn't be much of a concern since all y'all have an electric pump in the tank.

If anyone knows of an aftermarket solution like this, not sure if Racor has, please let us know.

If you extend the tank breather somewhere sensible you don't need a priming tool for a 2.4, you can simply blow or apply compressed air to pressurise the tank.
