Help! VCV/ ECU PROBLEM Scared I’ve bought a nail!
Hi there folks. Firstly thank you, I bought my second defender last week 2.4 puma, 2011 and am scared I’ve bought a nail. Seems to be a few hidden issues that this forum has helped with. The biggest current problem is that after 250 miles after buying the car it would have sudden complete power loss. This very quickly became more apparent and the car wouldn’t drive more than 10 minutes before it happened. Important thing to note here is that when the engine was turned off for three minutes it started again and pulled like a train, no smoking and idled amazingly. After reading through threads on here I cleaned the map, maf and used egr cleaner with little effect. I then changed the vcv valve which was a real pig and removed all the skin from my knuckles. 😂 After fitting this I thought bingo, it drove without completely loosing power. However, the battery light would come on it would loose some power, then the glow light would come on it would loose more, then off it would be fine. Now after only about 10 miles driven since the change it is smoky on start up (wasn’t before) it sometimes just cuts out randomly and has intermittent reduced powder. I’m at a loss. I did not do a learning on the valve, I saw on here it wasn’t necessary. Is the new valve maybe faulty? Anyway at a loss and terrified I’ve spent our hard earned money on a dodgy one. Any advice REALLY appreciated!

It’s not uncommon for the VCV to be faulty, I have changed mine 4 times over the years and 1 of them was faulty within 200 miles, change the MAF and MAP they are not expensive, cleaning doesn’t always work. Check all relays are fully seated and the connections in good order (under seat) there is also another connection on the dash binnacle which can give problems 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8

Thank you bear100, really appreciate your answer. I’ve ordered a new map, I’ll order a mas today together with another valve. I really think I’m in the right area as the previous symptoms of power loss went. Just replaced with new symptoms. 😂 You think faulty replacement valve over the learning being necessary? Are the relays you talk of in the battery seat box? Thanks again!

It’s not necessary to relearn your VCV I never have, it relearns itself after a few miles, to be honest I have never noticed any difference.
Yeah the relays are under the drivers seat, very very common to have issues with them working loose and bad connections. Hope it helps Thumbs Up 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8

Sensors and (another) new valve ordered. I’ll look at the relays before they arrive. Thank you once again.

Merlin Diesel is where I buy my stuff from, they’re a proper agent and very knowledgeable.

Would suggest this is part of your problem. Have a look at this thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic85644.html

Pages 2 and 3 have supplier details on it. Note PF Jones are not genuine > 110 XS Double Cab

Thank you so much Hank. This really does sound like my problem. I have now got a denso part arriving later from a specialist. I have everything crossed, so does my bank! 😂😬

So… Changed the valve again. It now won’t even start, just cranks over and over. Every time the valve is changed symptoms change radically.

UPDATE… Decided to swap out the new DENSO valve for the second (faulty) valve as I knew the car at least started with that valve. It fired straight up. So I’m guessing I’ve been very very unlucky and the new DENSO part was also a complete failed part? Any thoughts? 😬

Many of those Denso labeled sensors are made who knows where in china. I would just give it back and claim your money. Puma 110" SW
