TD5 intermittent non start
2006 TD5 no previous starting issues.

Stopped at the shops on the way home yesterday and when I went to start up it was having none of it.

When I turned on the ignition I was only getting the oil pressure, battery and handbrake warning lights and not the engine management and glow plug lights. The fuel pump also wasn't running. I checked the fuel pump fuse which was fine. After scratching my head for a bit I thought I'd give it another go and it fired up straight away after all the correct dash lights illuminated.

Any suggestions as to where I should start my search? An intermittent fault is definitely one of the most frustrating!

Take a look at the fuel pump relay (under the seat, the one on the right as you look at them through the door) and the socket it sits in. A bad contact here is a potential cause for poor starting.

Thank you both for the suggestions. I’ll take a look into those.

Im leaning more towards a fuel pump issue because I always get power when switching on the ignition and the engine will turn over.

You mention you didnt get the engine managenent/glow light when it wouldnt start. The main relay powers the ECU and the ECU controls the fuel pump relay.

Also worth checking the ECU earths as they are prone to cause issues

The engine always turns over so I’m not sure it’s a starter motor issue but I will bare that in mind for future reference.

I have just added a Rev counter which obviously meant tapping into the instrument loom. Perhaps I should take another look at my splices. Would a faulty connection on an earth there have knock on effects?

Had this problem and it was the relays under the driver’s seat bad contact cleaned up and cable tie did the trick

Yes that’s correct I think.

There is an inertia switch in line with the main relay - brown cable to the main relay coil (86) and the orange/brown cable from the main relay normally open contact (87) feeds the relay coils (86) of both the glow plug relay and fuel pump relay.

Just thought I would weigh in here, this all sounds very familiar to Miffy and I Rolling Eyes

I would urge you to check the internal contacts of your relays, page 13, last post of the Miffy thread shows how pitted they can become. This was a cause of my intermittent starting.

Thanks to all who contributed ideas.

I checked the relays under the drivers seat and they both looked clean but since then I haven’t had any issues so perhaps a good wiggle was just what they needed!

Onto a new problem now…

Excellent, if that is the case it is worth trying to close up the crimp terminals in the relay holders so they are a tighter fit onto the relay terminals Thumbs Up 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread

Next time it happens give the main relay another wriggle, odd’s are it’s that.

The ecu earth wire and inertia switch can also case the same problem
