The S still had a decent amount of kit. Only problem is prices are still a little artificially inflated due to the chip shortages and subsequent production delays and if you buy now residuals could tank during your period of ownership. I'm guessing it's the 2L rather than the 3L diesel engine being a 2020 model? That might be the biggest issue if you come to sell in a few years. If you can hold off another 6 months, prices should start to look a bit more sensible and there will be more to choose from. https://instagram.com/bentheoandrews

I think you have summed up exactly my concerns. Asking price is £60k which must be overpriced.
It is a 4 pot so for an extra £3/4K I can get a 3ltr engine which is more desirable but does stretch me somewhat and you have to stop somewhere. I was hoping prices would come down come the Sept plate change but seen no evidence of that yet. Will that happen? |

Just hold fast for a little while longer. Plenty of stock and prices will drop. Cargurus website shows a downward trend and reduction / time on the market.

For £60k you could have my D240 17500 miles First Edition……….
The local dealer has one just like mine on the lot for £72000………. it also has 10,000 more miles, doesn’t have the roof rails and cross bars, front bash plate, Duratrac All Terrian Tyres, rubber load bay mat, folding picnic table or rear recover eyes that mine has! Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come 2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed! |

The S is a nice spec, has everything covered but to echo others it’s over priced, especially if it’s the 2.0 4 cylinder.
The 90 I just sold, cost me around £48.5k inc options, dealer had it on sale for £62,750, now reduced to £59,750. Though I notice it’s been reserved. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue |

Yes, the S I am looking at is a 7 seater 2.0 with no extras to the basic trim. Still quite well specced and the intention was to keep it for as long as we can drive diesels!
BUT LR no longer offer this engine as all the lower spec models have been upgraded and more powerful I believe. The alternative for £60 would be a very nice Discovery Luxury 2019/20 which is tempting but after 7 land rovers ending with my current Disco 3 the new Discovery just feels too comfortable and doesn’t have that “robust” edge to it. Nice problem to have though in current climate……… |

Now the 3.0l 6-cyl is available I wouldn’t buy a 2.0l 4-cyl for any money. £60k is ridiculous.
I wouldn’t worry about spec, they’re well kitted out cars so you spend a lot of money for not much extra. Mine is a base, not even an ‘S’ and it has pretty everything anyone could ever need. You can add features aftermarket too, the only thing I might add to mine is the adaptive cruise control which can be done for a few hundred quid. |

It was only a couple of years ago that you were able to buy a base 110 for £45,315, on air and with the D200 3.0, oh the good old days. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

Well, try as I might I cant find a new Defender that I can afford. `I’ve been advised against the 2 Ltr engines and all the 3ltr are above my stretched budget so, sadly, I will look elsewhere but still in the LR range. Had them all my life and the New Defender was my dream car to sail off into the sunset as my last vehicle. Pity……..but thanks for all the advice and opinions.

l am in the same boat as you, a new Defender would be my dream car, l actually ordered a D200 Commercial in January, and since then the price has gone up from £47,000 to £54,000
lt's now right at the top of my budget and l am unsure as to whether to proceed. To buy it, l would have to take the 25% from my £80,000 pension pot, sell my 2005 Defender 110, and borrow around £15,000 However l would then save £14,000 on tax through my business as l can claim back 130% of the purchase price. l am honestly undecided. l didn't really want to go diesel as it's future is uncertain, but the D250 3.0 (the D200 was discontinued and l had to upgrade to the D250 at an extra £3,000) is a great engine. Maybe we should both wait a year or two for the prices to stabilise and maybe come down from their current high. |

Hi Lightning,
Good luck with your purchase but I’m a bit confused about your method of buying. If you take your personal 25% pension pot, plus your LR 110 and personally borrow another £15k or so this is all your personal money. So presumably you are loaning that money to your business via a directors loan account and the business will buy the Defender? In which case the business could claim back the £14K or so as you say. But then the business would still owe you the money you loaned and you could have that paid back to you tax free. Personally, whatever the ins and outs of it I think you would be taking a big risk financially in these uncertain times and 25% of your pension pot plus a loan is too much in my humble opinion. But what do I know😀 |
