Removal of bulkhead in my new commercial defender
I just got my new defender commercial hardtop and I’d like to remove the bulkhead. Is it as simple as removing the screws? I won’t be putting much but would like it opened up.

I have a Defender 110HT arriving at some point. I too was going to remove the bulkhead, or more precisely, try to remove most of it. Would like to leave maybe 6/8 inches to stop stuff sliding into seats etc but so that it doesn't feel quite so tight in front. I seem to remember somebody has done this somewhere already bit can't seem to see pictures or the process. Anybody seen it/done it?
On a side note, when I had to reconfigure r for 23.5MY I lost the ability to spec fixed adjustable towbar. I can only spec folding or removable. Have gone with elec folding currently but wonder if I really should just take that off and dealer fit the fixed one as do tow some biggish lumps.

I think the Folding one has a low weight limit which might not be right for you?

A full height mesh grille would be a great alternative to the black plastic wall. Hopefully it will appear as an aftermarket option.

It will as you say open up the vehicle and make it seem lighter/more spacious inside.

The only disadvantage l can see is, that the HVAC will have more work to do heating/cooling the interior, particularly in a 110 HT.

I'd have a full height mesh grille or similar in a heartbeat. I want to unblock the rear windows as well

I am sure that if you did 'unblock' the rear side windows, the commercial becomes a car and you have to pay more duty/tax on the vehicle.

Comment please .....

That's a little like the ever present person who responds to any modification post with "what about telling your insurer" Laughing

From Gov,uk

Do I need to inform anybody of the changes?

It may not be necessary to have your vehicle’s registration details altered, but you should check with the DVLA or your DVLA Local Office.

You should also inform your insurance company of the changes made along with the number of passengers and the manner in which they will be carried.

If you claimed the VAT back, you’d be liable for that and the BIK would change if it was a company car. A friend of mine had the VATman looking at his commercial Mitsubishi to check there were no windows or seats in the back! Presumably it’s worth their while to go out and check otherwise they wouldn’t bother…

Removing the bulkhead shouldn't change a vehicle's status with the DVLA, particularly if it's replaced with a mesh one, but fitting windows might.

How about making the existing mesh window in the bulkhead larger, if you want to "open up" the vehicle. I thought l would do it with mine, but having had it for a month l
am fine with the stock bulkhead and don't even notice it when driving.

lt may be boring going on about "telling your insurance" but you wouldn't be laughing after an accident if they used it to wriggle out of paying, and they will if they can, same as remaps.

^^ Very doubtful. Perhaps you'd care to explain how they know it's a commercial?

The only way it can be done (I think) is if every vehicle.is checked for rvenue weight and tax class in order to establish the limit, and it's only relevant for speed cameras on national speed limit roads. I do not believe that the technology, nor the DVLA nor PNC databases, can support this yet.
