Main fuse box feed
It's a well know attack method on Defenders to cut the cable that goes from the battery to the main distribution fuse box.

What's a better route for this cable?
It's a fat cable, so the routes are limited.

There’s a useful thread with photos here…

https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic61763.html

If you leave the original (disconnected) cable in place then it’s not obvious that it’s been rerouted.

The typical route is across the back of the seat box:

Thanks JPE and LandRoverAnorak for detailed replies, just what I was looking for.

I'm not buying a ready made kit, I can make up a length of cable with terminations myself.

Another solution I'm investigating. The idea of this modification is to keep the alarm powered if the feed is cut. The alarm can only draw a few amps therefore only needs a much thinner and easier to route cable. I'll post details when I'm done.

If your Defender is XS spec it is likely (though not guaranteed) that it has a BBUS fitted, which will sound if the battery cable is cut provided it hasn't been nobbled beforehand, so to that extent keeping the alarm powered may do more harm than good (you'll just prevent the BBUS from sounding).

Depending on year there is a mode which is very advisable to take a second feed to the 10AS unit to eliminate the "indicator light fuse vulnerability" (incorporated into the dash harness on later models). It is also essential to do something to protect the BBUS, since Landrover in a moment of design genius placed it in a position where it can be access from outside the vehicle.

If you do these two modifications, it doesn't really matter if someone cuts the battery cable, the alarm will sound.

Thanks for the insight. I was sort of heading in that direction. My Defender does have a BBUS (not tested yet) which is protected by a few extra layers of security. I'm not aware of the indicator fuse vulnerability, please PM me with the details so I can figure out the best way to provide an extra power feed to the alarm controller.

Have a look at this thread from aeons ago, it discusses the mod:

https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic35353.html

It describes the official mod and what it does. Later vehicles had the mod incorporated into the dash harness so don't need it.

All this info is in the public domain so no need for secrecy (and you can bet the thieves know it).
