Hi Old School

Half way there! ... Bolts out and area cleaned. Old bolts (25 yrs old I guess) show wear on about 15% of surface so not bad really but I will replace them tomorrow.

Other points: Still don't know whether to fit "Lock stop Bracket (BRITPART TAU100170)" ...
If I do, what's the type/size of spanner needed to release the bolts (arrowed in red)

As I only use my Defender once or twice a week for pleasure I feel I could be making more unnecessary work for myself Exclamation Question

Again while cleaning, I've noticed some pitting on the ball joints ... anything to be to be concerned about??

Thanks for all your help again - as always, greatly appreciated Very Happy 2010 Defender 90 300Tdi CW (White/1994)

The screws holding the swivel ball to axle are 14mm Bi-hex (12 point)and you are better off with a ring spanner. Have a look at the Britannica Restorations YouTube video as he gives some good advice, especially about using ratchet spanners in this application.

I believe the issue with pitted swivel balls is they damage the seals - it may be worth checking they still have oil/grease still in them.

I have just done the swivels on mine, and the job was OK though I had to cut one of my calipers in two to get it off and then a lot of messing with the bolts to get them out!

Before you start unscrewing the screws to fit the plates, measure them to make sure they will come fully out without fouling the swivel. I know to take the swivels off you have take them out gradually.

Don't bother with the lockstop plates, they are not meant to be there. The lockstop bolts work perfectly well when stopping against the swivel ball flange.

If the pitting isn't causing any leaks then no point in replacing them yet, just monitor at services to make sure they don't start to leak. It's a good point about checking there is oil in there though, this is often overlooked by owners/mechanics at service time due to lack of familiarity with the cars requirements.

Thanks again for your reply OS - appreciated!.

I ran a 12mm tap through the casting earlier so the threads are nice and clean. My other thoughts are to put M12x60 replacement bolts in rather than replace the original M12x50's as the lock nut was just on the end of the bolt and no more so by the time I make the adjustment to increase the stop the nut/washer will not have any threads to grip.

Failed to check the grease in the ball joints today so don't know whether there is any in there. Just ordered a couple of Britpart tubes and will check tomorrow when I re-fit the stop bolts. Grease will never go to waste.

John

Just one point about filling with grease. The britpart grease came with tube that virtually filled my fill hole. This means there is very little space for air to escape. I ended up having to remove a top swivel pin bolt to let it breathe and allow the grease in!

That very much depends how much of the lock-stop bolts protrude from the boss on the swivel.

At certain settings the side of the lock stop bolt contacts the swivel flange and bends the lock stop making it useless.

My 100" has the plates fitted and I plan to fit them to my 110" next time I'm waving spanners around.
