Defender diesel used for short journeys
l am on the verge of ordering a 90 Commercial

This comes with the 3.0 diesel and no petrol option. l know there was an issue with Evoque diesels when only used round town, where the oil was diluted by diesel. And some drivers in the VW Transporter Van forum have issues with the DPF.

My day generally involves journeys of under five miles between customers, with a stop of up to an hour at each customer.
Motorway journeys are rare, but do happen every so often, for instance every 6-8 weeks l make a 60 mile motorway trip to Wales.

My question is, will l have issues with the Defender diesel if l use it in this way?

No issues so far with mine, or any LR previous. So long as you give it a good run regular it will be fine. 23.5MY 90 D250 X-Dynamic SE, Pangea Green

Thank you for the reply.

What would you class as a "good run" and how often is it necessary to do it?

had my 240D for 18 months, mostly local journeys due to Covid limitations, <6miles between stops. A few longer journeys but not often. No issues that I am aware of for now. 2020 Defender 110 SE 240D: Fuji White.

I think that the issues with the Evoque (and Disco Sport) were a consequence of the way that the engines are configured in those particular models - something to do with the packaging of the DPF form memory - and don't affect the larger models. Darren

LRA, i agree with you. At the time the dealers were having to ask new owners to sign a form agreeing that they would have to pay for oil changes due to oil dilution outside of the standard two year servicing.

Basically once again, another JLR Censored up that the consumer has to deal with....... then they wonder why those owners went elsewhere.......

Your trip to wales should be fine. Every couple of weeks I take mine for a run around the coast but I will be getting an oil service done at a year old rather that wait the two years. 23.5MY 90 D250 X-Dynamic SE, Pangea Green

I have the D300 and not had any issues so far on short trips (albeit I've only had the car for just under a month)

I've done 34 trips under 6.2 miles (10km) out of a total of 59 trips.
Fuel economy will be poor, but that is to be expected.
I averaged 20.6mpg or 7.3km/l over said 34 trips. 22MY Defender 110 D300 S in Pangea Green and Contrast White Roof

I’ve had my D300 for 12 months, 10500 miles. Many short journeys, and a long journey perhaps once a month. No issues. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Put the question in writing to your dealer and see what they are willing to commit to?

Your usage does not seem to be ideal for a modern diesel. I'm in a similar boat with regard to the Grenadier. As much as I want the diesel, I think the petrol may be the way to go. However, I've yet to fully understand the implications of having a GPF.

Not a Defender, but our 4.4 SDV8 Full Fat only lasted 8 months after its last service before needing a oil service due to oil dilution this year. COVID has meant it hasn’t been on many long journeys, but it still goes 10/15 minutes down a dual carriageway twice a day 5 days a week.

Dealer refused to service it under its service plan as it wasn’t due and wanted 190+ Vat to diagnose why it required a early service despite saying it was highly likely due to oil dilution but they had to confirm.

In future it’s no big deal, we have the diagnostics to read the percentage and it was £80 in oil.

I also read that JLR had moved to 10% from 7% in newer models, if so that probably helps allot.

Here’s the DPF condition report on mine. As said, mainly short journeys over the past year. It’s not had a service yet or needed any adblu. 10450 miles.
