Wind-up backlash???
Please can someone explain (in idiot-speak) what "backlash" and "wind-up" are. I've seen the terms used many times in forums but never simply explained. How are they affected by how you change gear?

Many thanks, as ever,
Matt

Not affected by gear change but rather the different rates of rotation of the wheels. Steve.

look on wikipedia for backlash, its a big subject but quite simple.

wind up - on defenders, you engage the CDL and drive with it in. you come to disengage and it wont. torque has built up due to the differences in the rotational speeds of the wheels. on gravel its not really an issue, though can be if the surfaces change to harder ones and CDL is left engaged. its the reason why you should never use the CDL on tarmac. And many people use the CDL too much, leaving it in for long periods when really it should be used for short periods and small distances. if you continue to drive on tarmac with it engaged, you will damage the transmission. way to "unwind" it is to either put the wheels of one side of the vehicle on hard ground like tarmac and the other side on gravel or grass. drive back and forth a few times and it should come out. if it doesnt. on lose ground go lock to lock whilst slowly reversing, that never fails (in my experience)

ETA - it can actually be affected by how you change gear (though more how you drive really)eg youre going up a wet rock slope, you engag CDL, drop a gear and gun the engine hard. if all the wheels grip and you're on an angle it can lead to wind up. The harsher you are on the gas the more chance of wind up, but drive normally and it should be fine.

So for my Landy, backlash is the (not too serious) jolting feeling from the T-Box/props etc. as it takes up drive?

No, backlash is what happens if you are not careful when you have to let the rounds out Laughing Steve.

not meaning to pick, more so to expand on the reply

in my experience people dont use the CDL enough, most seem to consider it as a get out of goal card and wait until its too late before they use it. it is a preventative system, not a reactive system like TC.

as for using it for short periods i would say that is a very general term. you use it for as long as you need to, that could mean its in for days but the distance travelled is short or long or in and back out for 10s over a 50m section

if there is a risk of loosing traction then engage it prior to loosing traction and leave it in until that risk has passed. Cheers
