Got to be Paramo - These are waterproof.
There is now a vast array to choose from. I bought my first in the 1990s. It is still 100% waterproof.
In them days it was a very limited choice. Now they have a massive choice of types and colours.
They are pliable, not like the stiff goretex or wax jackets. And they don’t rustle, and rain on the hood is quieter than a goretex.
I have since bought a light weight which is still waterproof.
But the original Cascada is still a reference level for wind and waterproof that can’t be beat!

Just make sure they have the Nikwax symbol on the sleeve if you want waterproof.
As said by lohr500. They are commonly used by mountain rescue now.

I have a Barbour To Ki To military jacket. Had it 10 years, wax it every year.. shooting and general Land Rover travelling in winter… i’ve not looked lately, but they went up in value for years!
Here’s one for 750 euros!

Buy the ‘right’ Barbour and you’ll not lose money!

I bought a Skyfall Barbour jacket from someone on here, but it’s a bit tight around the shoulders, it’s gone up in value too… but the missus claimed it.

I’ve also got a Harkila Pro Hunter jacket, which is nice too.
I have more Jackets than trousers and shirts put together!

Another thing is down to how hot or cold you run. I tend to run a lot hotter than most folk as in I ski in a shell jacket with a t shirt on underneath, part of growing up in an old farmhouse with central heating. If anyone is like me then anything waxed is a no go.

Another vote for Hoggs of Fife. I have 2 of their jackets. I find them well made and good value.

Hi,

Stay clear of a wax jacket if you're after something other than fashion, waste of time in winter.

You cannot go wrong with Harkila, expensive yes, but worth it, best outdoor kit I have ever had. Seeland is a decent alternative (and made by the same company as Harkila) but at the more afordable end of the scale.

Agree with Chris on this one, worn Harkila for many years, virtually everyday, still as good as new, expensive yes but good quality, my winter outdoor coat is a Schoffel, great quality and again lasted me for years Thumbs Up Cogito ergo sum

I prefer Belstaff to Barbour for my warm wax jacket, and a single layer Gore-Tex jacket as a top waterproof/windproof layer when layering up is the better option. Just because you're offended doesn't mean you're right.

I’ve had both. Sealand isn’t a patch on harkila in my experience. Seeland woodcock trousers and breeks lasting only 1 season, harkila pro hunter so far on season 5 and look like new. They honestly feel indestructible and the gore tex is some of the most breathable gear I’ve got, and I sweat!!

Agreed, Seeland isn't as good but then again its not stupid money. I have pair of Woodcock Advanced trousers and to be honest I cannot fault them, but they are not a patch on the Harkila Stornaway Active pair I have as my go to pair. I guess like most things, you get what you pay for. Thumbs Up

Many thanks for all the responses. Given me some food for thought.
I've sort of decided on a Harkila. So plan was to go shopping, try a few on and see which I liked the most then hunt the internet for the best deals.
I like the Pro Hunter, 1 is on fleabay in my home town for a lot less than 1/2 price. Pics look like it's fairly new with no obvious signs of wear and tear. But the auction finishes before I'll have time to go try that model on. Which is a pain in the butt 110 D250 SE HT
