LT230 whine on over run after oil change
Morning all. I changed my transfer box oil a few weeks back now and ever since I’ve been getting a whine in over run when above 40mph ish. I used 75W90, not sure what was in before but there was no noticeable noise. The noise isn’t getting worse. Any thoughts? Should I swap for a mineral oil, would that make it quieter being a bit thicker?

I think there’s a debate on here as to whether you fill with specific amount (2.6l I seem to remember - but do check) or up to filling hole, and what the results are after. Which did you do? Monsieur Le Grenadier

Filled her up by volume, but that did end up just a shade below the hole.

Sure someone will advise on oil type etc. Interesting as I’m doing mine today. Could it be something else in/around the box? Monsieur Le Grenadier

Are you sure it’s your lt230? Whine on overrun tends to be diffs as most likely culprit. You could pull your propshafts one at a time and test drive to eliminate either axle from the equation. When taking the rear one off, remember to make sure your handbrake cover screw is tight.

75W90 is what the manual states.
I had a whine for a very long time, but was constant. Turned out to be the handbrake shoes rubbing on their sides against the drum. Old handbrake mechanism though. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Swapped the oil out today after about 1000 miles. I found a single piece of metal in there, along with a small amount of filings on the magnet. The piece is as per the pic. Clear machining marks on one side and not on the other. I sieved
the rest of the oil and found nothing. If this were a gearbox at work I wouldn’t be over worried about the single piece of metal, but the oil looks a bit dark to me. It doesn’t smell bad. Any thoughts?

I thought it was a bit. Test drive in the morning so I’ll know whether it is still whining. The synthetic oil that came out was body temp to the touch as it had only been sat in the drive an hour or so, the mineral oil that replaced it was noticeably thicker at around 25c. Time will tell.

Perhaps the synthetic oil had more detergent and has cleaned some old muck that was clinging inside. Fingers crossed. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

20 mile test run this morning and noticeably quieter. Interesting!

Was it EP75w90 you used initially, or manual transmission 75w90?

There’s a question. I’ll have to check, but what is the difference and what would the effect be?

Cheers
