Fuel pump - advice.
Hi all.

She failed to start this morning. After spluttering to start initially, she subsequently wouldn't and I've narrowed it down to the fuel pump having failed with the help of Green Flag and their diagnostics.

Is the pump inside the fuel tank on a 2.2 Puma (it looks like it is from what I can see of pictures of it)? Just trying to factor-in the time and labour costs of having to drop the tank to fit one if so (it's not a good month financially this one for us Big Cry ).

Yes I believe it is on the 2.2, and the Td5. Not the other models.

Thanks all. It’s a pain cos it’s a BH weekend and I’m working on Monday too. Never mind.

The ‘diagnosis’ was reached because no noise from the pump could be heard when attempting to start it. The car did start hesitantly first try like I say (after several cycles from the starter motor) but starting was then accompanied by 2 warning lights on the dash - the engine management light (amber) on the left binnacle and the TC warning light (amber) on the right. I switched off the ignition and tried again. Subsequently, all I got was the starter motor whirring away. It’s always fired first time until today.

The diagnostic run by the Green Flag guy read something like ‘primary circuit under volt’ on the screen, but the battery is fine.

Which relays, if you don’t mind me asking? Any fuses I should check?

Can’t help with that as I’m a Td5 boy, but once you find it you can stick 12v up to the pump and see if you hear it.

I take it it’s not like the Td5 where you can prime the pump, via throttle pedal before starting.

Interestingly, once at the garage, Matt put diagnostics on it and got what he called 'the usual' collection of error messages from a Land Rover that's failed to start (crank position sensor etc.). He started checking the fuel system and changed the fuel filter and it started! Fuel filter was changed at a B service a couple of years ago (it's only done 53K miles).

Subsequently, it's started first time every time. He's driven it up and down the road - 5 mile runs - several times without any issue. Still started first flick today for me.

Here's the rub. We still can't hear anything from the fuel pump to suggest it's working Shocked Has it 'gone quiet' because of an impending total failure? Has anyone else had this happen before its eventual death? Have I got a haunted Defender or is there another explanation for the silence?

Hope it is nothing more than what you have found.

My 2.2 Puma fuel pump has never been noticeably noisy. The only sounds I hear are when I open the doors on the fob. Something starts up then for a couple of seconds, possibly the fuel pump. The car is in the garage, and I am outside so noises more noticeable then.
Other than that I don't notice any noise from the pump.

Of course you could have gone deaf from all the other noises in the Puma Whistle

Failed to start again today. Same thing - starter motor turned but nothing ignited. Been fine for a few weeks.

Back to the drawing board. Still think it’s the fuel pump but I swear I could hear it today.

Back again cos it failed to start again. Any TDCI ECU wizards out there?

The mechanic due says that you can prime the engine with diesel in a way that puts more fuel through (e.g. after changing the fuel filter - which is when it started before) by depressing the accelerator pedal 5 times (the ECU instructs the pump to deliver more fuel) before turning it over. It failed to start for me again yesterday but it did when doing this trick!

I know it's an electronically-controlled throttle. Is this right though? Can you 'prime' the engine independent of ECU control with an electronic throttle? Is it the ECU playing up (there were no error codes for that)?

It doesn't explain how it can drive normally once running and also why it doesn't run roughly - surely it would struggle under any acceleration if the fuel pump was giving out?

You need to look at more than just fuel pump for the engine not firing up
