If you've recently replaced the swivels then it's almost certainly an incorrectly set preload on them. Removing a shim may well cure it but you really need to measure with a spring balance to set them properly. Darren

Remember swivel preload on a defender axle higher than a disco/R.rover axle as one twin bearings other bush/bearing

When I did the swivels I measured the preload with a spring balance, so they should be correct... I am hoping. There isn't any play in the pin bearings or wheel bearings. Instagram - @Land_Rover_Defender |

I replaced my swivels and had to redo swivel preload about a month or two later as they had loosened, typical britpart, should have used timken bearings instead. Mind and remove oil seal to get preload.

Move front wheels to the rear and rears to the front and see if the wobble goes. 1999 Defender TD5 110

I get a non specific steering wobble too on my TD5 sometimes, all the bushes are brand new, I've checked the bearings for play and can't find any but mine is just through the steering wheel and doesn't always present in the same way. I've got a new Panhard rod and drop arm to go on and the other thing on my list is a new lower steering column as it could be the UJ's in there.

Steering damper and swivel preload are the most likely causes, if you’re running larger tyres it’s definitely worth considering upping the preload from the standard values. If you have replaced them recently then do check them as they do bed in and lose the preload.
There are loads of other possibilities though, for example I currently have intermittent wobble and it’s being caused by the transfer box output shaft having play in it |

Don’t forget the ball joints on the front anti roll bar.
If there is any grease left it’s probably gone hard and the ball notchy. My money is on the panhard rod. Change one thing at a time then test, otherwise you won’t know what the culprit was for next time. |

All new anti roll bar joints front and rear and superpro bushes. I am running 285/60s which are a big tyre and the steering does sometimes feel light over country lanes. Maybe I do need to adjust the preload to suit the tyres more. UJs are also new and have 0 play in them. The only that hasn't been changed are the shocks and steering damper. What's left to check would be the preload and then maybe steering arm? Not sure what else to look at now. Instagram - @Land_Rover_Defender |

Rally Steve, not running wheels spacers no. Just the 285s with a ET 10 offset, so they on the limit of the arches.

Are the mating faces on the hubs/wheels clean? This can often be an overlooked cause of wheel wobble and can affect front and rear axles but most pronounced via the steering wheel on the front axle of course.
