United Kingdom 1999 Defender 110 Td5 SW Caledonian Blue
When I had my wheel wobble, i did the replacement bushes, steering drop arm, steering damper, wheel balancing, checking wheels for true and the wobble was still there. I ended up swapped front wheels to the rear and rear to the front and wobble cured. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Steering damper is a red herring - it’s not there to damp that sort of high frequency wobble, its purpose is to damp steering kickback from ruts etc. - if it does anything to prevent it, it’s only masking the real problem.

If you’ve done all the bushes and the wheels are properly balanced, swivel pin pre-load would be what I’d check (I had the opposite - turned out to be Panhard bushes, wear wasn’t obvious until they were out).

Had all my wheels balanced about a month ago now, so I am confident this isn't the issue. But yes I have heard stories of people going through everything and then swapping wheels over to then cure the wobble. Instagram - @Land_Rover_Defender

I did the same. Even tried another garage just in case...still the same. Swapped around and all good. 1999 Defender TD5 110

When I first bought mine it had brand new tyres and wheel wobble at around 60mph, took it back and asked them to check wheel / tyre balance.
Took it home, the issue wasn’t cured.
Took it back, they took it somewhere else to check wheel balancing, and this time round they sorted it.
So it sounds like not everyone can balance them bob on first time.

Edited: mine’s a Puma sorry, although not sure that makes a difference.

when i had a death wobble at 45mph, it was the panhard rod (would add it was as bad as a bike tank slapper, and scared me witless)

once replaced i was left with a steering wheel wobble which was a wheel bearing incorrectly set up

moving back to 235's on standard rims from 285's on offset rims also lightened the steering, and i would not go back to oversized tyres now

That’s why I use AJS Tyres (Andy used to be a site sponsor) in Reigate as they can deal with the larger tyres..

Reduced the number of shims on the top pin of the swivels today and it has fixed my wheel wobble!

They weren't loose but clearly not tight enough to prevent wobble. Can finally enjoy driving it again with the new Superpro bushes and having it setup properly.
