Diff failure caught just in time !
The new to me 130 with 55k on the clock has been making a mechanical rattle between overrun and light acceleration. It appeared to be coming from the front end .

I checked the UJs but they we’re fine, dismantled the hubs and the Cv’s seemed good .
Then thought I may as well have the Diff out to check it over, thinking I can’t possibly have two Pumas with front diff failure within 18 months of each other !

Low and behold the pin holding the whole shooting match together had elongated the holes and had sheered the roll pin . Two teeth had gone but the whole thing could’ve gone bang at any moment.

Here’s a pic or two.

The later diffs must be made of cheese as this never seems to happen on older vehicles.

Yes , it’s 2009 so I’m not sure that qualifies as late. My 110 was also 2009 that had diff failure AND axle failure (weld sheared)

I’m shopping around for a replacement as I type , nobody has anything ready to go and ideally I’d like to upgrade to a 4 pin diff.

Any recommendations gratefully received https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

I believe this one failed because the roll pin dislodged (it’s intact in the diff pan ) https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

It is well known that the Rover pattern single cross-pin diff cannot cope with the power characteristics of the Puma engine in the longer wheelbase (heavier) vehicles, even Land-Rover acknowledged this when the supposedly started fitting the four-gear diff in the front. It is very evident from this forum that LR did continue fitting the two-gear diff long after they said they had stopped, and it is best to assume that you have one whatever your build sheet shows (you can check by peering through the filler hole of course). Landrover certainly did stop supplying two-gear diffs as replacements for failed units in 110 and 130 vehicles, and in theory you could only buy a four-gear diff if you two-gear diff failed.

The failure mechanism is that the the hole in the diff carrier for the cross-pin elongates, the pin moves, the roll-pin either shears or drops out, followed by the cross-pin, then the pin and gears come adrift and the diff locks solid amongst a catstophic disintegration of gears, teeth, etc. If you are lucky, as I was, all that happens is that the differential action locks up (just as though you have an engaged manual difflock) and the vehicle becomes almost impossible to steer. If you are unlucky the front axle locks up and the vehicle becomes uncontrollable.

Landrover with customary professionalism deny that there is anything remotely resembling a problem. This, despite saying that only four-gear diffs can be used in the front, and despite fitting the four-gear P38 diff in the rear for the whole production run (why? Because the two-gear Rover diff wasn't considered strong enough for the back, but was considered fine for the front! Go figure!)

Not so, there are many 110 and 130 post this date that have 4-gear diffs according to the build sheet but actually have 2-gear diffs in the axle case.

I think the moral of the story is that if you have a clatter under very light load (coasting and you casually brush it off as a UJ … check it ASAP

Now where to get a 4 pin diff ?
