Steering guard vs. protection bar
Hi there

I have a steering guard on on my one ten made out of heavy steel.

Now I am wondering if a simple protection bar (NRC7009) wouldn't be the better option. It's definitely lighter, but how about the level of protection?

What is your experience on this?

It won't be 'as good' but does offer some protection and they are cheap and light. I guess it depends on what you use your Defender for as to whether the compromise is worthwhile. Having said that, lots of Defenders just seem to have steering guards fitted for show these days, so perhaps use isn't the only consideration anymore. Darren

Ive got the NRC7009 bar fitted from new and Im not sure that it would do much more than collapse with a blow. its not the most substantial thing...

I have the NRC7009 on mine but would like to fit Jate rings instead of the standard lashing eyes.
Will the Jate has be wide enough? Do they come in different widths? I think the Jate will have to go on the outside?So may have to put on longer bolts.
Has anybody done this?

I used to have that bar, thought it was the dog danglies, Camel trophy here I come....

until it hit a mild lump of ground and bent like a straw (into the steering damper Rolling Eyes )

Binned it, fitted a southdown and never looked back.

I suppose you could slide in a piece of scaffhold tube inside the "bar" to beef it up a bit if you were that concerned.

I think they come in suitable width to fit over the guard. See attached pictures.

Great - thanks for the shots. Could I ask a favour - please can you tell me the width of those fiitted.

Now just a decision of fitting those or going for a steering guard with built in recovery points.Steel or alloy ?
Are alloy ones capable of sustaining a knock? Won't they just dent? Like the idea of a strengthening bar inside the hollow NRC7009.

Steering protection bars only offer minimum protection, plus they rust very quickly. Steering guards offer full protection and if you fit an aluminium guard will look good for years and years. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

I've never been convinced by aluminium steering guards. To be effective they need to be a lot thicker (typically 10mm v 6mm for steel) and as the brackets are still steel anyway, the weight saving is negligible. You can buy lighter ones - I've seen some with 6mm steel brackets and 6mm ali guards but they seem far too flimsy to me.

I do like guards with built in recovery points though - effectively two birds with one stone. Mines a steel galvanised one and is very sturdy:

I have fitted a Flatdog steering guard
Quality 8mm machined aluminium.
Countersunk fitting, hex head bolts.
8mm Mild Steel brackets zinc plated & Powder Coated.

It appears to me to be a really sturdy piece of metal but I do agree that some others are flimsy. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

I have measured them. Seem to be 88mm on the insides. Difficult to tell exactly without removing them. 1995 Defender 110 CSW

I had them on my Camel Trophy Disco and on my G4 Challenge D3, but I don't see a point on a defender. They won't protect your track-rod and that is the one what bends mostly.

I have nothing fitted.

2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Stornoway Grey
I have a modified protection bar with a beefed up bar. I ran over a boulder hidden under water along a river (the only way in and out plus was trying to outrun a flash flood with the group) caught some air time and inspected the bar, rather than being perpendicular to the ground, it now looks like a smirk. Have a dimple on the lower portion of the front diff cover too. Sheared three of the four bolts securing the steering box.

Steering box sorted, have the replacement front diff cover, have diff guards on order, replacing the bar with a plate type steering guard made of steel.

Better be safe than sorry. But in fairness to the bar, my day would've been much worse had it not been there. While it's still on the truck, I'm thinking of unbolting it since it doesn't look so nice anymore plus can scrub the tires at full lock.
