The shhh sound is probably the turbo, you won't normally hear it when driving.
The crunch when turing off is the EGR valve cleaning cycle. So both normal |

No problem with Zaggist questions You'll also notice that if you press the throttle a little while in neutral the revs will rise as expected but then drop back a little. Steve. it's not supposed to go 'crunch' - it's supposed to go 'chukka-chukka' 5 times or so: -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

that's not right - it could be a stuck EGR valve. have it seen to asap! -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

Rossy, my one (500 miles old) shudders when I turn it off and then you can just here a metallic swish , swish , swish which I assume is the EGR clean.
There is no heavy metallic noise though.........wel not yet anyway. Stu |

just went for a spin and the egr has started doing its cycle - the 5 chukkas when switching off - it never did that until today - the car only has 300 miles on it so maybe things are freeing up since sitting around for the 2 months since it was built.
The crunch has become more of a shudder and its from the transmission area. I have noticed that the Gbox and Tbox levers wobble about a bit in unison when driving as if the whole transmission is on flexible mountings. Don't know if thats supposed to happen but the gearchange is nigh on perfect with no clonks or shunts - does anyone else have wobbly levers ? |

sorry Honker you must have posted same time ish as me didn't see it until I submitted and you are right - its more of a shudder - does your gear levers move about on the road as if both 'boxes are moving about ?

Well they move around a bit but no more than I'd expect, more than a diesel car but not something I'd say is an issue. My gearbox has a chunky change but again nothing more than I'd expect.
The shudder is different to a normal car and feels as if it's just settling on it's mounts, I've just assumed that's normal!! Stu |

I had a good look underneath and I found the answer !
The transmission is attached to the chassis by two mountings - Gbox to the left side and Tbox to the right. Each mounting features a big fat rubber bush which explains the movement on rough roads. But you know how it is with a new car. Every squeak is a potential disaster until you get to know its ways |

Apologies
I know what you mean though. My 90HT's about seven weeks old now and I've done about 1600 miles in it. At first I thought the gearbox was knackered so I asked a few Land Rover driving mates to have a go. "it's fine" they tell me. I'd traded in a 59 plate LWB Wrangler for the 90, not exactly cutting edge technology in itself but very reliable and comfortable over the 18000 miles I'd covered in it. Getting into and driving the 90 felt like stepping back 20 years. It's a basic, agricultural, noisy and characterful vehicle and I'm very pleased with it so far. Reading some of the stuff on here can certainly (and probably un-necessarily) put the wind up the first-time Land Rover owner, I guess the thing to remember is that you're only reading about the bad ones not the thousands of good, reliable, hard working ones out there. Having said that, I've just booked mine in with a local garage (not the L/R dealer but an independant recommended by other Land Rover drivers) for a general check of fluids/levels/nipples and the oil and filter changing. Just to be on the safe side. |
