1949 80” ex-Ministry of Supply Today I bought my first 80”! She’s a 1949 ex-Ministry of Supply example. Currently fitted with a 2.0L petrol with Rover aluminium cylinder head and uprated carb. Still has its ring pull gearbox though! The rear diff’s white paint is still very obvious, remarkably. The chassis is remarkably good for its age. There’s a tiny pinhole in one of the outriggers and at the base of the bulkhead. I’ll get those sorted when the weather warms up. I need to replace the speedo cable, but blackwolf has furnished me with the part number. The fuel gauge doesn’t seem to work, but it might be because the tank is very low. So that’s to be confirmed. The tyres are all knackered. So 4x tyres need fitting. The light in the dash to indicate the full beam is on also seems dead. Hopefully just the bulb! LRSOC membership purchased. Interesting that they appear to be later ('52/'53) spot-welded front wings, complete with the pressing for the sidelights. The hold-down clips for the windscreen on the bonnet also seem to be absent (they should face forwards on the bonnet on a '49, later vehicles had them fitted to the screen rests).

Yes it has a few odd features. I’m not sure whether they’re related to its military service or because it’s been damaged and thus had the front end replaced. Either way, all part of its charm!
