2007 Defender 90 Td5 HT Keswick Green
I have cut something off I shouldn't have....HELP!
Hello all

Whilst taking off an old steering guard that was rusted solid to replace with a new ORE one I got a bit carried away with the angle grinder... As a result I have cut through two bolts that in hindsight look quite important to holding my Defender together.

One of the issues I foresee is I cannot seem to see the other end of the top one on each side...

Any help would be much appreciated plus what replacement bolts I need.

Panhard rod brackets on the offside, two bolts:

    FC112326 - (1/2UNF X 6.1/4")
    FC112246 - (1/2UNF X 4.3/4")

From the 2007 on parts catalogue, and, yes, they really are UNF bolts on a 21st century vehicle!

Since the panhard rod is only fixed to the chassis at the offside, it is probable that the bolts on the nearside only held your steering guard.

They aren’t UNF, they are M12 starting from two years into the 21st century.

As noted in my post, I am just quoting the parts list. This clearly states the numbers I gave as applicable to 2007 on vehicles, those part numbers are UNF.

To resolve this I have just had a look at my 2007 2.4 110 and the Panhard rod bracket bolts are definitely 1/2" UNF, confirmed both by bolt head markings and AF measurement, and not M12.

Fair enough, but it doesn't alter the parts list and doesn't alter what is on my vehicle. I suspect that it is another cost-cutting exercise by LR.

LR list these (or have listed these) as 1/2 UNF. Even the matching nut FY112056 is listed as 1/2 UNF on the 2007 on diagram:

Fastener type  METRIC  M12  Length/5 = 160mm   Variant/Finish


Similar for the Nut - xx112xxx is an M12 nut

Td5 and earlier are definitely 1/2 UNF, this is up to 2006:

The part number decode is interesting. Curious that my '07 Puma definitely has UNF fasteners!

Absolutely brilliant bit of info - I've been looking at parts books for 30 odd years and never ever knew or suspected that there was a coding in the number.

I notice also that the metric parts are flange head and the UN parts were not. Again I suspect that this is financially-driven since it eliminates the need to stock (and manage the stockholding of) and fit washers, which in volume manufacture must make a worthwhile difference.
