XS 250D or P400
About to order one of the above but I am torn between these two engines (the only choices are D250, P400 or P400e). I currently have the D250 spec'd because I wanted to keep the overall price down. Downside is the DPF on the diesels as most day to day journeys are 12 minutes (commute) or much less when taking the dog out. Obviously we will do much longer trips but I have a form to sign from the dealer asking me to confirm I understand that the DPF requires 20 minutes+ journeys every now and again to clear. New DPFs are £thousands I believe.

Does anyone order the P400 out of choice? I know on the previous X it was the only option and I get why someone would lust after the V8, but in the real world D250 v P400?

I drive a V8 Audi at the moment (to be traded), so enjoy the power of larger engines. I also have Freelander 2 which needed the DPF blasting at 600 degrees to clear by the indy dealer because of too many short lockdown journeys (lesson learnt).

Have I missed anything?

For a 12 minute commute I would think an electric mountain bike might be more suitable.....__ and possibly faster. For the UK market it actually the only other P400 option other than the X with £20k the difference between the XS and the X it’s quite an attractive model in that respect and if you want power and nice sounding engine. I’m seriously considering it, very tough call though as the D250 is also a great engine.

I seems the XS is a cut price/optioned X as well as being a spec'd up SE. Too tempting though I suspect a D250 will have better resale value in the UK

I was thinking the opposite and that the p400 would hold it’s value more due to it being a more affordable limited option to that engine. The D250 will be the most popular engine model in the uk and therefore flood the market.

Have read many people moaning about the delivery times on the petrol P400e engines for some reason.

I decided to go for a D300, on the basis that at some point when I sell it, it will appeal to most buyers and is the pinnacle of the JLR diesel technology right now. 2016 D4 HSE

I’m definitely not interested in the p400e I’ve got the RRS one as a curtesy car and personally I think it’s crap. I’m only interested in the XS model because it’s good value for money when spec like for like against SE. I have the D250 first edition now and the engine is fantastic just a shame my car seems to be riddled with faults and it’s only 1 month old.

Any thoughts on real world fuel consumption between the two?

This isn't the US so i would have thought that frequent trips to refill would get a little boring and expensive after a while.

Nice to have the option though.... Thumbs Up

I think it’s best not to plan your front end buy on the used market unless you were considering buying it in pink with a yellow interior. Buy what you need/want. The new Defender will be valued on condition and miles just like any other SUV when you come to change. I think the 3 year predictions were circa £21-27k I in glass guide with 12kpa miles. So at the bottom end of the range you’ll lose £25k and top end more like £35-40k.

Pretty standard depreciation numbers for something of that value. 1951 80" S1 2.0

All fair points. I think the d250 will be better for me as no real difference in real world driving.
As I said, want to keep the cost down upfront.

... it’s just when you see all the US reviews, they all have p400s and they sound good

D250 is the engine of choice for us when we order shortly. It seems to be the sweet spot of the range and faster and more powerful than the D4 it will be replacing Thumbs Up

Besides which I can’t justify the extra £3720 on top of all the other options on our chosen spec Laughing

If you go for a D250 and later regret not choosing the D300 I’m sure that there will be a remap available to match the power output between the two?

I’m also pretty sure that the cost of a remap will be far less than the price difference between the two engines if purchased from new?

That's always the frustrating bit when basically the same engine costs £5k more. I drive an Audi S6 (last V8 version) - same engine as the RS but 2/3rds the price. I know it's not the same as the RS in many ways, but once your settled into to driving it day to day it's more than you could ever need on UK roads. Maybe a D200 is the best engine, but luckily that choice is not there for the XS so going to stick with the D250.

I'm the sort of person who prefers a limited choice in these things!

Thanks for the comments btw

I found myself struggling to choose between 250 and 300 too. I know it won’t help the OP one little bit, but remember that the 300 also gets the 4 pots up front (and, I think, larger discs all round). This helps to explain the chunky price differential, but also means that 18s won’t work on the 300 (or P400, P400e or V8 ).

There’s also a post elsewhere on here which shows that aftermarket ECU development work on the D250 didn’t yield the same torque figures as the 300, suggesting (to my admittedly ill-educated mind) that there may be some hardware differences between the two.

It was with a heavy heart (but lighter wallet) that I went for the D300, for the brakes and additional giggles.
