Plastic? Mine secured with a threaded bar attached to the bulkhead. Had a metal disc with foam on it and a wing nut.

I moved mine from this position, as if you tighten that nut too much - or actually just enough to take the slack out then the tyre ends up getting marked by the sharp edge of the tub:

That is exactly what mine came with (my spacer is steel, not aluminium though, and I suspect that yours probably is too). I have sometimes wondered what is the purpose of the two slots in the disc, any idea?

I have also removed the bits fixed to the bulkhead since they stick out far enough to be a real nuisance if you don't use them for the wheel.

I'll stand corrected on the spacer ~ it's a while since I last handed it and jumped to the assumption from my photos

No idea about the slots ~ another LR mystery?

If you have alloys you don’t get the spacer. And it was indeed a spare locking wheel but holding the wheel in, not a wing nut. That was on my roof wheel mount. 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html

By that I mean there threaded bar with mounting plate, the retaining disk and the spacer. The nut is just a standard nut.

What do you mean by "mounting plate", in my DCPU what I would call a mounting plate is riveted in.?

Yea there should be a bit riveted to the rear bulkhead. Tucks up under the capping. The rusty bit in my photo.

Mine was rivetted in too, until I drilled out the rivets and removed the thing. It stuck out too far.

Exactly what I did before the Line-x coating went in. No more pointy bit sticking out at the back for the dogs to hurt themselves on. Also beans anything I carry in the back can sit flush against the bulkhead. 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html

Yes the mounting plate is riveted in.

I drilled mine out as I converted my PU to a soft top and now mount spare on swing away arm.
