tow hitch query

hi, this is the tow bar i have on my 90 currently,

hopefully i will be adding a nato hitch


now the queston is what do i need to buy to put these together, sorry but have been trawling the net and cannot work out if i need a complete new tow bar assembly or just something in between.

help and or part numbers will really help

If the holes line up (or if you own a drill) you can just bolt the NATO hitch directly to the drop plate. It will, however, be rather low for towing a Sankey, if that's what you have in mind. Those hitches are really designed to bolt directly to the crossmember, which IIRC is even drilled for the purpose. There should also be a strengthening plate that fits behind the crossmember to spread the load.

Last time I had one of these fitted was many moons ago on the back of a Series III, with a similar drop plate to yours below it. ISTR being able to still use the standard tow ball if I turned the NATO hitch sideways. Darren

Bear in mind that that ^^^^ isn't a true NATO hitch.


A proper one is much beefier, and can rotate (something that is needed on fixed eye trailers like most 'sankey' type trailers are.


Also, a proper one will match the 4 holes in the crossmember... either bolt straight through (with a spreader plate on the back) for pre Td5 crossmembers, or bolt ONTO the crossmember for Td5/PUMA. however, the later crossmembers are fairly thin in comparison to the older ones, plus the bolting method doesn't seem as strong, so the optional hitck kit might be needed, which consists of a hefty (10mm or so) plate that goes between the hitch and the crossmember, which drops doen below the bottom of the crossmember. Then a piece of angle (similar to the angle used on the dixon bate adjustable height hitch) bolts to this dropped plate and the bottom of the crossmember, to give some strength.

Just remember that to be 100% legal towing equipment fitted to cars M1 post 98 have to be type approved

However type approval is not required for commercial N1 vehicles.

According to Dixon Bates website towing pintles are not type approved. Forget military vehicles as they may well claim crown immunity etc

I think the solution is to change the tow bar for a type LR007221 and fit the pintle via a 2 pin sliding hitch.
The actual hitch I'm after is a genuine one, the picture I posted was just one I found on the net.
