Winter Fuel Additive
Just wondered if anyone has had experience of using a diesel winter fuel additive. I've had problems with my tractor fuel system waxing up during our recent cold weather. Can anyone recommend a brand of additive to help reduce waxing? Defender 90XS SW

Is this for red diesel as I thought ordinary diesel had an additive mixed already to stop waxing? Do not know if the same is true for red For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

As gilarion alludes to you don’t need additional additives to prevent this if you use regular forecourt diesel.

Use of a periodic EGR/DPF cleaner would be more beneficial, especially for vehicles that only do short journeys and never get to perform any form of DPF re-gen Ride like you stole it!!

Maybe your issue is the Diesel Bug problem where modern diesels have a percentage of biofuel which if left in a vehicle over time gunks up the fuel lines and filters. It’s the kind of thing which a tractor would be susceptible to. Boats and generators also have a similar issue.

I think Gilarion may have solved my problem in so much as the tractor has a mix of red diesel and duty paid diesel. As I only use the tractor periodically it may be worth while draining off the mix and filling with duty paid diesel. Defender 90XS SW

Biodiesel content is maxed at a 5% mix and I thought that forecourts had to clearly display if their fuel included it?

Some manufacturers don’t support the use of it in modern diesels at any diluted mix, so I would err on the side of caution and avoid it.

Can anyone here provide more detail? Ride like you stole it!!

I think the biodiesel percentage is a legal requirement. I may be wrong.

I also don’t think apart from the colour there is any difference these days between forecourt diesel and red diesel. It’s just a duty thing. All modern tractors are Euro 6. Just like a modern truck or car.

You are correct that modern common rail Diesel engines shouldn’t run on pure bio fuel diesel.

Didn't it used to be standard practice to add a gallon of petrol in winter to avoid waxing?

Best if you avoid Petrol anywhere near a Diesel system nowadays, the damage to other fuel components, including the engine far outweigh any presumed historic benefits Ride like you stole it!!

In the 1960's, Plant Hire companies used to put a gallon of paraffin in their diesel tanks in winter to reduce waxing. Defender 90XS SW

Ah, so no worries about EGR's, DPF's or high pressure fuel systems then.

The diesel bug issue is a good call if it's only used occasionally. Diesel in the UK should be more than capable of withstanding the cold that we typically experience. Darren

Add 2l.of petrol.

We did it as standard practice with tdis for cold weather environments. Cheers

Having recently dropped the fuel tank in my daily driven Td5 90, I can confirm that bio diesel bug doesn't just effect vehicles that aren't used frequently. Luckily I caught mine before it showed any symptoms or problems. I have now treated all of our diesel vehicles with biocidal additive Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon
