I have a pair of genuine front seals I bought new from main dealer 2015 and have never been happy with them, the door takes some force to shut compared to my other Defender, and I had to adjust the strikers outwards to compensate. I might try a pair of Bearmach seals.

if you go on you tube, Britannica Restoration you will find this guy who has about 1000 videos all related to landrover repairs.

he has a wealth of knowledge and tips for easy fixes for landrovers.

once on his site you can find at leaset 3 videos to explain door seal rubbers, woth while watch.........................cheers Ivan 2016 Discovery 4

I messed around extensively with the seals and doors when I fitted the new genuine seals - I have owned over 40 Defenders so am well versed with door and striker alignment!

From memory the seals were being held too firm by the reinforcement inside the seal for the barrel curves. They got better after a month or so but even now six years on the door when shut is not flush with the body.
If the striker is adjusted so the door is flush, it takes a lot of force for the second operation of the latch, which is what causes cracked inner door panels. In addition, the tub door pillar is under a lot of force which is how they end up cracking around the striker, so I had to compromise and the door is still slightly proud of the body when shut. This was despite new genuine door latches and X-trouser strikers to remove any play in the latching operation. They are Puma doors correctly aligned. The later lower door seals probably do not help as they add an extra layer to compress but it was the barrel reinforcement which causes the problem.

I also have a 2015 which is completely standard with its original seals with no issues but I am loathed to pinch the seal off it to try on the older Puma as once they are removed, they never grip fully and end up being knocked loose around the door striker areas before ripping your trouser pockets on the striker when exiting the vehicle.

I will report back on Bearmach seals - Clemmo where did you buy yours from?

Bearmach website has the seals listed and left and right door seals. I am assuming left is near side/passenger side? Am I right?

This is all very timely (and useful) as I need to do mine soon. I have two types, clearly the previous owners swapped a pair, but as they're split between front and back (i.e. One matching pair on the front row, one matching pair on the second row), I'm not sure which ones are the genuine and which not. Whistle

At Bearmach's price I'll just swap all of them. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

Apologies for reviving a 2 and a half year old thread, but it saved creating a new one.

I have recently had water ingress in my Defender Puma Hardtop, quite bad ingress to be fair - soaking some cushions in the footwell, the carpet, the floor, and behind the firewall matting (though I think the foam backing "absorbed" some, which is how it got up there).

I need to sort this fairly quickly - firstly so i can be certain that it is the cause, and also so that I can stop worrying about a wet footwell whenever it rains.

I did the old watering can trick and my footwell got sodden, including the top of the door card - this wasn't a clue before but the car has been sat for several weeks so it probably just dried before i got a chance to see it. Tracking it back it was coming in at the top of the door frame, so likely it is the passenger door seal.

Anyways... Is it still the case that Genuine is best, or as mentioned are Bearmach a good alternative (I see the ones on ebay only get 2-3 stars, but the above on this thread is to the contrary).

If you do (and its passenger) mate that would be amazing, thanks. I'll at least PayPal you for the postage, and a goodwill beer money gesture. But if not, no worries I'll just order one. I had come to terms with parting with £90 anyway tbh, I only asked here as I the bearmach reviews on ebay are still a bit hit and miss.

I’ve also just fitted the Bearmach seals to both front doors having using generic parts a few months earlier, they are night & day better, they fit perfectly and navigate the bends in the frame without wrinkling out of shape.

No leaks whatsoever since, with all the rain we’ve had.

Available on eBay for £20 each delivered Thumbs Up

Thanks JCW.

Are they uniform across all defenders then? Same from series right up to Puma?

I will be honest the bearmach ones I had were very poor, I swapped them back for genuine within a few weeks, when side by side (new) the difference between them is night and day, and when you close the door with the genuine seals you can actually here the air escaping out of the central rib.
Had them on now for about 4 years with no issues so far.

It is indeed a passenger (I think that’s what left hand front means?!). PM me your details and I’ll post it off in the morning.
