Well plastic omnium who make the Grenadiers fuel tank have hydrogen tanks in their portfolio so I guess its a wait and see.

They have a great video which makes it all look very easy to scale into a Grenadier, plus they are already in collaboration with Hyundai...

Interesting technology for the hydrogen storage tanks, very similar to the thermoplastic pipes with a carbon fibre tape wound around the liner technology which our firm (before I retired) developed with an off shore oil company for oil field risers to replace the heavy metal pipes traditionally used. Extremely strong but lightweight and with very high burst pressures.

"Gaussin’s Hydrogen-Powered Truck is Dakar Rally Bound

Gaussin has announced it will enter a hydrogen truck in the 2022 Dakar Rally. Gaussin is a French engineering company that specializes in the fields of transport and logistics. They’re no strangers to new technology, as they’ve worked on autonomous vehicles and alternative fuels across a number of business sectors.

Their foray into racing, the H2 Racing Truck, is capable of reaching a top speed of 87 mph with a range of 155 miles under race conditions. The truck is fueled by a storage tank that holds 176 pounds of hydrogen, and an electric motor on each axle produces 402-hp. During times of high electric load, the motors can be powered by an onboard 82-kilowatt-hour battery. The H2 can recharge in 20 minutes using a specific hydrogen cooling station. Unlike most current hydrogen offerings, Gaussin’s system is designed for an ultra-light chassis to make the most of its range and speed.

The Gaussin’s H2 Racing Truck is part of the Dakar organization’s “Dakar Future” energy transition program, with the end goal of a 100% “green” Dakar Rally by 2030. The H2 will debut in Saudi Arabia at the first stage of the 2022 Dakar Rally."

I'd be even more impressed if they entered an autonomous truck in the Dakar!

Leasing costs of the Toyota Mirai are now circa £450 for business users. We have 5 hydrogen filling stations within 30miles and I do like driving something different. We had our first nissan Leaf in 2013 and everyone told me EV's were dead in the water....

Here's an interesting spin on the Mirai and "Toyota's 'obsession' with fuel cell–powered cars" and that "the Mirai is being kept alive mainly to save face for an older generation of Toyota execs and Japanese government officials."

It's certainly interesting to think that the "When Toyota first began investing in hydrogen in 1992, it was actually a forward-thinking move. At the time, few would have guessed that lithium-ion batteries would evolve as quickly as they have. The original Tesla Roadster was 16 years in the future."

Look where we are now.

Re: JLR unveils prototype electric Defender powered by hydro

"Jaguar Land Rover has revealed its 'Project Zeus' plans for hydrogen fuel cell powertrains for its hulking 4X4s
It has confirmed testing of a prototype hydrogen Defender which produces only water that is drinkable
Further evaluations will be carried out in 2021 with the intention to have production models before 2030
The hydrogen-electric Zeus project is part funded by the pioneering and government-backed Advanced Propulsion Centre based at Warwick University
Jaguar Land Rover is stepping on the gas with a new hydrogen-fuelled electric 4X4, the British car maker has announced this morning.

The zero-emissions prototype Defender uses the hydrogen in a fuel-cell chemical reaction to generate electricity which then powers electric motors to drive the wheels of the off-roader.

The only bi-product from the exhaust is water so pure you can drink it.

The project confirms that the British marque looks set to follow rival 4X4 maker Ineos Automotive, which has said its 'green' version of the forthcoming Grenadier offroader will be hydrogen electric rather than using heavy battery packs.

Codenamed 'Project Zeus' - after the ruling god of thunder and lightning - JLR aims to disarm critics who condemn large 4X4s and SUVs for being 'gas guzzlers' by creating a green vehicle off-road vehicle that really does guzzle gas – but in the cleanest possible way with no harmful environmental side effects.

Testing begins later this year with production models of fuel cell Land Rover Defender, Discovery and Range Rover potentially on the road within the decade.

The new fuel-cell electric prototype is part of Jaguar Land Rover's aim to achieve zero tailpipe emissions by 2036, and net zero carbon emissions across its suppliers, products and operations by 2039.

This in turn is part of the company's new 'Reimagine' electrification strategy for Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles announced last month by new chief executive Thierry Bolore

A production model could be on sale within five years, given the rapid acceleration of electrified technology.

Although too early for exact prices, there will be a premium for electric zero-emissions vehicles, so expect prices to star from around £65,000. The Government's £2,500 plug-in vehicle grant is capped at £35,000 so at this price it would not qualify. Prices for current range for Defender range are from £44,210 up to £101,220 for a powerful V8 110."

Interesting section in this week's article in Autocar about JLR's Project Zeus:

"Jaguar Land Rover said in April last year that it would test a Defender FCEV by the end of 2021 as part of its emissions reduction programme, but in October it lost its fuel cell chief, Ralph Clague, and it declined to tell Autocar whether he had been replaced or whether the test went ahead as planned."
