Mine also started doing this about 2 years ago.
I changed the coolant and fitted the spacer.
Tried it over the summer and it was ok but very close to the 110degrees that sets it in to limp mode, so next year I'll get the thermostat changed and it should be fine.
I read somewhere that land rover recommends towing in 5th and the temperature doesn't rise if in 5th gear, maybe it has to do with overfuelling. but if you add the spacer and the thermostat it should solve it.

Maybe the fan needs a smaller pulley to speed it up. That would give the same effect as running in a lower gear. When I had this problem in the Spanish heatwave last year, I found that running in a lower gear and keeping the revs high helped. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

In this Country I’ve never had an issue,
Only when driving in Spain, Portugal or Italy.
Here it doesn’t get hot enough, unless you are towing and I don’t tow anything heavy.

Just changed the waterpump, CHT sensor, fan spacer, thermostat & radiator. Took her for a ride and now there is no heat when gearing down or when idle !

Anyone has had the same problem.

Now im going for a longer ride to see if it cuts of in 6th gear.. FINGERS CROSSED. Defender 110 Puma 2.4 tdci

Same problem here for a loooong time.
As described
6th gear
120 KPH
mild long slope up
hot days (>35C)

After certain time, temperature increase to 112-115C and the engines going to limp mode.
Cylinder compression is normal and no coolant consumption

I have already changed the thermostat, I have the fan spacer, a new enhanced radiator and intercooler and the temperature has been drop compared to the initial situation, but still happens. I have a preset alarm in my ODCBII reader when the temperature going over 110C to avoid the trouble reducing speed to 100 KPH when all bach to normal 90-95C

Cheers! Eduardo

UPDATE !!

Hello Guys...

Just went for a 100 km ride with various driving.

Up hill in 130 kmt and nothing happend. Some times as much as 140 kmt !!!

Is has certainly worked for the Lady.

Putted in 300 kg of sandbags in the back of the landy to simulate towing.

I am so happy for the difference. Defender 110 Puma 2.4 tdci

That’s good news!

I’ll change my rad, thermostat and CHT and see if that fixes my issue.

Took a long drive from Jutland to Sweden yesterday. Normally she cuts of when going 100 kmh..

Now i can drive 110-120 without cutting off.

I had one incident when i was driving up hill for 3 km. I wanted to overtake another car driving 100kmh and when i reached 125kmh she cut out.

Thats totaly fine with me. Normally i drive 100-105 kmh and now she dosent cut out at that speed.

The conclusion is that it has really helped and no i just enjoy that i can overtake cars driving 90 on the motorway without cutting out. Defender 110 Puma 2.4 tdci

Thanks for the update!

Thats positive!

I have now ordered the rad, thermostat and CHT so will hopefully fit next week.

I did change my VCV today which I think has made it sound better and it certainly feels smoother than before. I don't think it's fixed my issue but I'll do a run tomorrow just to check.

Do you happen to have live stats? If you do it would be interesting to hear what temp yours now sits at when cruising.

I had it blowing hot and cold.

First check the coolant level on cold. Next check the white plastic heater valve at the back of the engine after the car has warmed up to make sure coolant is getting up to it.

I made my heating better by starting the engine and doing a bleed. I then drove it to get it up to temp and I bled it again through the bleed screw with the engine on.

WARNING - When you do this boiling coolant can spray everywhere! I cut the the top off a water bottle and put a notch in the side so it would go over the pipes. I then used the bottle top opening to put a screw driver in to undo the bleed screw.

I used the bottom half of the bottle to catch run-off so I could also inspect it.

* If you had a garage fit do the recent work, they would have had to empty the cooling system. They should have refilled it and then followed the recommended landrover instructions.
