I think Td5 where already with self tapping screws there, not sure the size though.

Thats weird because if I try to screw the old screw back in there is nothing to hold it.
I was under the impression TD4s had a screw clip to hold it in place/tighten it. |

I have never taken a tdci roof off yet, so I cannot be so sure, but I am 100% sure that the Td5 had self tappings (2003 model for sure). I cannot remember if there was a clip on the roof to accept the self tapping.
The earlier Defenders had an M6 bolt there (M6 thread on the roof). 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

TD5 and TDCi have the same roof and fittings. Sounds as though either there's a hole with a stripped thread or a spire nut is missing. What's on the other side of the car?

I re read your question.. sorry I read it too fast before. And now see quite a large hole where the self tapping should go into.
It is possible that part 302532 have to go 'behind' the hole. The top rail of the roof has large holes where the nut plates that fix the top of the windscreen go. But the last one if still quite far from the corner (unless you have a finger which is 20cm long ![]() Perhaps you can tape the insert to a cable tie just to push/guide it in place from the last hole. Once you get it close, use a small screwdriver to get it into position. I think there should be a slot where it slides into, but will be hard with the roof in place. You can then pull the cable tie if the tape that you use is not strong enough. Or just leave it in.. it will not corrode or rattle. Not any easy one without removing the roof. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Should be either an M6 bolt, as mentioned above, or a 6.3mm self-tapping screw, probably x19mm - quite common and still used to hold the sunvisors.
With our pop-top roof an M6 bolt rattled loose in exactly the same place as yours - Icelandic corrugation ![]() However, the roof's frame is a few mm thick and had an M6 thread (now knackered) so it was an easy bush fix using said 6.3 screw. Didn't last long though and in the end I cut am M8 thread. |

Thanks, that might actually be a good option!
