Largest Offroad Tire on Stock 22" rims
I don't do serious offroading but end up on muddy trails, roads, sandy/beach areas a dozen times a year while hunting and fishing. Also doing some "light" offroading at big bend.


I'm debating to get a spare set of dedicated offroad rim/tires but for the above i'm thinking through just keeping the 22s and refinishing my rims once a year or so.

1- Stock tire is 275/45/R22 (Which is really 31.7x10.8"). How large can i go without using those lift rods?

2- Could I fit 285/45/R22 ( 32.1x11.2) or even Terra grapplers (32.52" x 12.5")?

Welcome to the forum
If you are going to buy a new set of rims why not go down to 19’s or 20’s with a bigger selection of tyres? You don’t say which model you have because you might even be able to go to steel 18’s if it’s a lower spec S. I run all the time on 20” GoodYear Duratracs that are pretty quiet onroad and great off it. The small wheel makes no difference as all the cars end up with the same rolling diameter as the small tyres have bigger sidewall = more rim protection, more opportunity for airing down a bit too. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

If you want to keep these wheels but put some off road tyres on then Atturo do a trail blade model in 285-45-22
They would be more than capable for the sort of terrain you described above.

I ended up going with 285/45/F22 Nitto Ridge Grapplers, they fit. Can't see any rubbing with wheels fully turned and lowest ride hight. Last minute and discount tire had them in stock, just seeing now i could have saved maybe $500 bucks going Atturo!

Not the most daunting offroad trip, but I'll be doing all the trails at Big Bend national park this weekend and plan to gradually get more challenging over the next few months. Lets see how the rims survive!

This was inflicted by a peat bog on my front passenger side alloy ( but oddly not to any others ) which would be driver side front for LHD cars, yesterday. It was the only wheel that lost traction in the situation and spun. I have 20” Duratracs on mine and on the various long rock crawls I got one small nick on the outer edge of another rim, fortunately the detailing company I use also do alloy wheel refurbing. In previous cars I never took them into situations where rock crawl was needed but am really impressed with how it gets you up with hardly any revs on and with no spinning wheels on the wet rocks I was trying to scale. Makes me want the rear e-diff even more!

I thought those mud blotches were holes at first! then i got my bearings.....how does it look cleaned up? Do scratches show up easily? I understand its offroad and scratches will show.

It shows - I’m not phased by off-road damage, if you go there you have to accept it’s going to happen and it will cost you to rectify. I’m prepared to accept that for the enjoyment and challenge NOT to get major damage.

One thing that concerns me with 22” wheels and tires is the clearance in the wheel arches. This is mine this morning at off-road height full lock on 20” rims and there is less than an inch clearance on the arch liner





The wheel after my first wash, it was a very quick wash as I also had a dental appointment this morning so will do the big wash tomorrow

Think I’ll be getting a set of 18” wheels just for off road. The 20’s and 22’s haven’t got enough side wall to protect the alloy
