UPVC Window advice, please
Can I call on the collected wisdom of the forum for some advice re. uPVC window frames?

A friend has such windows, installed perhaps 20 years ago, and on one window the interior uPVC finishing trim has come unstuck from the wall, since it was actually stuck to the wallpaper in the window recess, rather than the wall itself. There is also a howling gale (and rain) coming in through the resulting slot.

Clearly this needs to be stuck back in place (not to the wallpaper this time) and the gap between the window-frame and the wall needs sealing properly, and it was my intention to buy a cartridge of white exterior frame sealant for the purpose. However this is not my particular area of expertise and when searching Amazon for white exterior frame sealant I find hundreds, all with mixed reviews, none with overwhelmingly good reviews (this may partly be to the stupidity of some of the reviewers however).

Someone on this forum must be a frame sealant guru (we have gurus for everything here!) so I was hoping someone could advise me whether:

a) I should use a silicone sealant or an acrylic sealant, and

b) what make or makes are good and what are bad.

Sounds like there is a need to fix the outside if rain is coming through into the inside.

Just go to your local builder / diy merchants and ask for a couple tubes of white frame seal Thumbs Up

And yes defo sort the outside first Thumbs Up

For the outside I would clean out existing sealant, clean with upvc cleaner then wash down and dry. For deep gaps use an expanding foam. Short bursts as it expands like crazy and gets really messy inside and out. Note inside should be sealed with the beading or a quality acrylic sealant (as that can be painted etc) before using foam from outside, else it will expand inside and mess up decoration.Any foam that does get on the upvc frame can be wiped off and a short squirt of WD40 and a rub with a rag removes any residue ( yes finally a good use of wd40! ). Do this before it sets hard. On outside cut back dried foam so it is a few mm short of the face of the frame. Then use quality silicon sealant to fill the gap between frame and wall. Dow Corning 796 is a great silicon for this.

Dow 796 UPVC silicone sealant would be fine (£6.28 from Screwfix).
Outside is a must as well as inside.
However do not use silicone sealant if you need to paint over. If paint is needed use Acrylic.

Oh...and a mistake a lot of people make is to lick their finger before smoothing silicon or acrylic down. This adds bacteria to the mix and can cause mould. If using a finger or thumb have a small cup of water to add lubrication, not saliva . You can also buy silicon finishing tools. A little kit is only a couple of pounds on line and gives lots of finishing profiles. Just google silicon finishing tools. Again lube with water.

Don’t use silicone it always eventually fails, peals off, and stops the ability to paint anywhere you have smeared it. This is the type of what I would use
