Not really a very good test in that I am sure the old Defender would have traction control even though they state is doesn't! Gas, Grass Or Ass - Nobody Rides For Free

"UNDERSTEER" ----is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" ------is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" ----is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" -----------is how far you take the fence with you.

I just watched that Smile

I don't agree with the last comment, the only people who don't like the new defender are those people that haven't driven it....

I've driven it but still don't like it, or rather could not justify £73K that it cost in my trim choice. Having driven it off road I do completely agree with Mat its so easy.... It does feel like it would go anywhere you point it. You don't feel connected to the car though and it drove pretty much the same as a FFRR on the off road track we did. Almost everything you can just leave in auto and it does it.

You cannot argue that the tech is doing well it seemed a fairly equal test and quite simple. The Old Defender even had new tyres so at least had a chance.

Now how about the old shell on the new body Thumbs Up This was the one I drove.

I saw this too. [Sarcasm]came across as really fair and unbiased[/sarcasm] and definately intended to downplay the old vs new. As others have said, they must have deactivated the TC.

About the "the only people who don't like it are those who haven't driven it", well first off who has driven every, or even most cars on the road to get a "fair" opinion? Secondly, is it just about the drive? So looks, styling etc are not factors? Beauty is subjective. We don't all fancy the same women, why do we have to like the same cars? It's not a case of right or wrong, its personal opinion. 2011 110 USW

It’s all meaningless unless someone can emulate the Amazonian tracks during the late 80’s Camel Trophy or we see it compete in the Rain Forest Challenge, which let’s face it, it would never happen.

Let's see how it copes with a snowplough on the front and a cherry-picker in the back.

Ouch not very sympathetic driving there! Someone needs to brief him on “slow as possible, fast as necessary”... and yes, weird that the Puma seemed to have TC disabled. Cheers, David

As an owner of both old and new they are both very good at what they are designed to do. There are some things that one might have an advantage over the other but then there is also something else to balance it out. Like 99.999999% of buyers I don’t care a fig that I cannot fit a cherry picker or a snow plough to my new one, I wouldn’t want either on my 1996 90 either, I’d rent the cherry picker or a tractor for the one day a year I might need them. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

Was it not a case of it being optional in the UK perhaps? --

Funny you say that. While looking at that photo my first thought was that the new one would date very badly. WARNING.

It would be a rum old do if a brand new vehicle that has had millions of pounds and countless hours of work put into it was beaten in a test by one that has its origins in something from 1948.

I thought quite the opposite. Tin can or plastic bucket, everyone can choose.

The issue with TC was also very strange; but I struggled to see the point of the 1st test, the old Defender seemed to have the edge over the first half of the hill and some of the shots appeared to show the old Defender winning:
