Dead battery and locked out
Hi guys
I’m buying another Defender but the owner has had it stood for a couple of years so battery is dead and he says he can’t get in to the car.
It’s a county spec 110 DC so has fob and electric windows.
Should you be able to get in with the key or does the car not work once the battery is dead.
Any suggestions or PM if sensitive so I can offer a solution and get it to Promec for a good service

Unless the locks are seized / disabled then he simply needs to unlock with the key.......

Does it have twin tow electrics or 13 pin socket you can put fused 12 volt supply to it for operating the locking?

It is entirely possible and indeed highly likely that the driver's door lock will have seized up, in which case it could be difficult to gain access unless the vehicle can be powered.

It is however possible to connect a booster battery (very carefully) to the starter solenoid (for the +ve) and to a decent earth point (for the -ve) and that should power it enough for the central locking to function. Whether the plip batteries are still any good, and whether the plip is still synchronised after all this time is anyone's guess.

If that doesn't work you can "slim jim" the doors disturbingly easily.
