Hi Mike, if its noisy something is not happy. Changing oil viscosity may mask it but it won't fix it.
Are you sure its the t box making the noise? Is it noisy under power, ciadting or on over run? Cheers James 110 2010 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Its noisy under power, if you back off it stops, it's only got about 96000 on the clock otherwise great, the gearbox itself runs and changes lovely hence suspecting the transfer box as the noise generator. I have read a whiney transfer box is common though? I just wondered if the oil would make any difference.
Thanks Mike |

After many forum posts I went with Motul gear 300 in transfer gear and diffs.
Drives like a new motor. |

have you tried removing props one at a time to check its not diffs. Cheers

No I haven't tried this, obviously its something that will need further investigation. If it was the diffs though, wouldn't it do it all the time, so not just under load? I have depressed the clutch at that noisy speed briefly and the whine stops instantly

Hi, replying to my own post here, but what transfer box oil do you use, 75w 90w as per book or ep 80w 90w?
Thanks Mike |

Personally I have a drum of cheap ep 80 90.
Seems to do the trick, Box whines, but it's done 230k and has run dry at least once in it's lifetime. |

Its weird, I went with the book 75w-90 for my 2004, yet my land rover indy who really knows his stuff and has been in the business for many years told me it's the wrong oil for the transfer box?
I pointed out that I ordered the oil as per book, but he said it will make it noisy, I think he has always stuck with the ep 80w90w for years for diffs and transfer box. There seems to be a mix of views on here. ![]() |
