Water leak from engine oil cooler.
Noticed this morning that I have a pool of coolant under the vehicle.
After pulling myself under the engine I can see a stead drip of water coming from the engine oil cooler which is above the oil filter. From the workshop manual it appears that the joint the water is dripping from is a bolt on spigot for the hose, the part catalogue does not appear to list a joint of o ring as a seal.

Unfortunately my Indy is not available to fix it.

Has anyone had this problem or can help as to how it can be repaired? Don't make old people mad.

How like Land Rover.

After finding someone who has the knowledge and the willingness to work on a Land Rover S.H.M.B.O. dropped it off this morning. Called after 2.00pm and they have inspected it at first the could not see a leak until the receptionist told the mechanic that our drive is on a slope, he lifted the rear end and hey presto Niagara falls, he agreed that its a seal that has gone which should cost at the most a couple of quid only problem is the seal is not a replaceable item that either land rover of Ford list and its a special size , the only way to replace the seal is to but the whole unit which is more £££'s Big Cry Don't make old people mad.

Another learning day.

If anyone is interested.

The engine oil cooler which is mounted on top of the oil filter, has a thermostat fitted to the water side and one on the oil side . The one on the water side is bolted to the oil filter, assembly, has a rubber O ring seal and comes off at an angle.

The rubber O ring on mine failed and was leaking about 2 Gallon of water per day, having now got the failed part home and had a good look at it its a wonder that it ever sealed in the first place. Don't make old people mad.

Yes, I'm interested!

Mine has developed the same problem, a day after getting it back from having the clutch replaced.

Can you remember what the replacement rubber o ring part number / brand was by any chance?

Cheers!

My 2011 130 has had replacement cooler fitted for this reason, came with it like that when I purchased. Interestingly the replacement cooler is later type so mine now takes later spin on filter not earlier insert type. Cheers

Liam, mine has just developed a coolant leak at the oil cooler thermostat (62K Km). Were you able to replace the O-ring on your thermostat and if so, do you have a part number? Cheers.

I changed the thermostat itself, it's only £16.99 for the unit

Part and number is: OEM Oil Cooler Thermostat For Land Rover Defender 2.4 TDCI Puma - LR005894G

It was done by a garage, I will have to have a look through the paperwork to see if they put the part number on. Don't make old people mad.
