Turned my attention to the front calipers. I have actually set a target that by Christmas it should be able to move forward under its own power, so it also need to stop. Will be far from finished, but will be a milestone which I hope is reachable.
So I ended up splitting the calipers, this way the bores can be inspected and cleaned better. So some pictures in order: after 24hrs in the electrolysis bath dissolved most of the rust, but still needed a quick over with the wire brush. I have zinc plated them (no pic for that) and etch primed them. Have used the old pistons and the wipers to mask the bores. Calipers ready, need to sort the short rigid pipe from caliper to flexi hose. The original ones are ok, but the nuts are a bit rusty. Checked the genuine ones.. but pricey for what they are
Click image to enlarge On to the prop shafts. All good except one cross that showed a bit of play, so that is replaced. Click image to enlarge And painted a few more bits. Today I sat down behind the steering wheel of my 90 for the first time in more than 4 years. I was like a kid again on those kiddie rides 😂. Cannot describe my smile 😃
And ohhh my, the steering, the seating, and everything felt so different (and spacious) compared to the Puma Perhaps the lack of doors, windscreen and roof, but the steering wheel and dash felt so far away. Enjoy it - you deserve a little bit of harmless fun after all your hard work.
Did you make engine noises whilst turning the steering wheel from side to side? |

Got the hard brake lines, from the G valve all the way to the rear slave cylinders, and the short ones on the front calipers done locally,. Collected today .
Made a quick tool to straighten the coiled uneven pipes, and worked really well. Now I need to build a bender, as the one I have creates a larger radius of curvature compared to the original lines. Then all that is needed is paint them green, just like how the originals were Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge In case anyone wonders how the straightening tool works, the upper 2 bearings are fixed. Their ID is 10mm, perfect fit on M10 bolts. The lower bearing has an ID of 12mm, and use an M8 bolt. In between the M8 molt and the bearing race, I turned an M8 nut eccentrically, which threads on the bolt, and support the bearing. So by adjusting the spanner position on the M8 bolt, I can move the lower bearing upwards or downwards. So it was just a matter of trial and error adjusting the spanner back and forth until I was happy with the straightness of the lines. I kept 2 small pieces of wood to keep the tube centered on the bearings (I was keeping the lines down with my thumb). 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Had a little knob moment...
When I had purchased the 90, replaced the gear knob (probably original was already falling off), and installed the gear knob that can be see on the left. I do not know the provenance of this knob, but have a feeling it came out of a Range Rover. Click image to enlarge Decided to go back to the original knob. Click image to enlarge Fitted the left inner mudguard... now waiting for delivery for some parts so the wheels can be fitted - but will stay on axle stands to avoid flat spots. Thanks Col. The original inner mudguards were re galvanized. I only show the best part of the galvanizing , as the way the mudguards were hung for the zinc dip, some zinc pooled inside the mudguard. But it adds some extra protection 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

You won't get flat spots, you'll have it running about before then!! James
