Whilst you wouldn't want to swing from them like a gorilla, mine have been fine as a helping hand when the steering wheel isn't fitted. As I mentioned above though, I have used some slightly larger bolts. Darren

I imagine LRA actually used setscrews rather than bolts.

If you were to use a threadforming setscrew such as a Taptite it would cut its own thread, but the measure of success would rather depend on how much damage the original self-tappers had done to the bosses within which the holes are located.

Does it do any harm pulling yourself in/up with the steering wheel? I do it most of the time (ducking at the same time). I could do with a grab handle on the cubby box!

One of the more generously proportioned chaps at work managed to pull the chubby box out of one of the 110s using it as a grab handle to get in and went straight on his backside.

Wasn't funny at all.

Chubby boxes now have very large repair washers in and are bolted through the floor with very large washers to reinforce the other side.....

I fitted an aluminium handle to my passenger side A pillar and it was useless. Every time anyone used it, it moved. The screws, and indeed I think the pillar, were simply not designed for this arrangement.

Is there a way to add a reinforcement to the A-pillar so that this can be a fully functional grab handle?

It's one of the first things people, big and small, look for when first trying to get into the front passenger area. I just tell them to use the "Dear God" handle.

@HardCharger, I’m not sure. You’re right that it’s needed, but the handle over the door that I’m sure was there on my last Defender isn’t there (anyway, I have a console fitted that extends to the roof/door interface). My wife is just over 5 foot and she has to use pitons and a base camp to reach the door handle.
I did fit an external loop handle which I will photograph as soon as I’ve had a coffee and regained basic motor skills.....

Doubtful, short of fitting an internal roll hoop I would think.

I have the plastic handles that were on the inside of the front doors now fitted to my A pillars and find them very useful. They are not very strong handles and neither look nor feel very strong, so instinctively you tend to be gentle with them, and this actually helps.

I wouldn't mount a really robust looking or feeling handle there since it would give the false impression of being strong.

Do any passengers reach for the big fat handle under (where you can fit) the glove compartment? I don’t recall seeing that ever happen ...

The strips that the self tappers go into to hold the trim do not have any strength, they are only designed to hold the trim. When I purchased the 110 second hand the drivers side trim piece was way off the windscreen on removing the trim I saw that the strip was ben outwards, I used gentle thump pressure to push it back into shape. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.
