Rear A-frame pivot bracket bolt torque
I think that the Haynes manual has got me again :/

It quotes the rear pivot bracket bolts as needing to be 174 Nm. Well that nicely stripped the thread for me on the front one.

It did seem quite a lot I must admit, but then it is a fairly important mounting, and they are pretty big bolts (1/2" I think).
Nothing that the angry tool couldn't rectify, but a right faff as I now need to source new bolts and nuts:

Why can't they just get these important things right in the book.

Cross referencing with the pre-93 Land Rover workshop manual looks like it has a much better value of 115 Nm:

I'm struggling to to find the information in the newer Workshop manual though - it says section 64 for the rear suspension but I can't find any reference to this there? 2005 Td5 90 XS

Hmm, makes me question the quality of the ball-joint. I've quite happily tightened mine with a breaker bar with both feet braced against the axle. Definitely more than 174Nm of torque applied to it that way.

Sorry just realised you weren't talking about the ball joint itself Embarassed

I've normally just done those up nice and tight - they're a fine thread with nylocs so provided it's clamped everything together properly then they shouldn't come undone. If in doubt look up the torque required for the bolt diameter / thread combination - that'll be the definitive source. Ed

Yes I should do that. I have a habit of doing everything up way too tight, which means I either break them directly (as in here) or can never get them undone again.

I'm trying to solve the problem with much use of the torque wrench, but that relies on the right information being in the books! 2005 Td5 90 XS

84 lbft = 115 Nm







Grade 5 1/2 unf bolt 85 lbft -----------Grade 8 1/2 unf bolt 120 lbft

Had the same problem start of the year fond the gross referencing with the pre-93 Land Rover workshop manual with 115 Nm: for two bolts for the rear A-frame pivot bracket bolts

look up max torque for 1/2 unf bolt grade 5 and 8 and pre-93 Land Rover workshop manual torque 115 Nm make sens


LR RAV 1999 to 2002 my supplement needs to be prof read and red pen to add missing texts and sort the bad texts Banging Head if Haynes have coped it you will have same problem

Grade 5 = 8.8 metric --------------------- Grade 8 = 10.9 metric
