Should I have play
Overhauled and rebuilt my swivel ball and associated parts. All nicely put back together but I noticed vertical play on my swivel (not a lot) no horizontal play and it’s the whole swivel that moves slightly, not the bearings I have the track rod disconnected. Is this normal? 1990 200tdi conversion 90

I don't quite understand what you're describing, but whatever it is it shouldn't be doing it. There should be no play in any direction in correctly set-up swivels.

Sorry need to clarify swivel the swivel housing, if I grab at 6 o’clock and pull the housing (as if checking for play) there is a slight movement but only when pulling the bottom and pushing the top, very slight.

I wonder if I need to change the bottom swivel bearing pin 🤨🤨 1990 200tdi conversion 90

I had to use lots of shims to get the preload correct (4.5 kg). Lots 1990 200tdi conversion 90

There should be no play. If the hub is on, make sure you're not feeling movement in the wheel bearings rather than the swivel.

Swivel play 12 and 6 is king pin bearings or shims incorrect. Cheers

Apologies if I'm talking pants here.... Embarassed

If I'm seeing it right, your picture seems to show that the swivel seal, and its retainer is in place. In this case, when you're measuring preload, you are having to overcome the resistance of both the pin bearing and the seal.

My Workshop manual isn't to hand, but I thought it said preload should be measured for just the bearing - with no seal in place?

My logic then tells me that you could be shimming the pin to get the right preload, but the seal tension is putting your readings out.. So, the preload would read OK, but the pin would be too loose and giving you the movement you're describing.

As I say, could be complete pants... It's just something I dimly remember from when I last did this job.

If I've got it wrong I'll hang my head in shame for 5 minutes... Donald

Donmacn you are correct in thinking the rear swivel seal should not be fitted at the time of testing.

Have the bearing seats and bearings fitted correctly? I have seen people reuse the races due to being awkward to remove and fit, with new bearings and this has resulted in problems. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Thanks all (new races as well as bearings fitted).
The problem was too many shims. Removed till play went then built shims up so I got the correct preload. The seal was giving me a false preload. Brilliant thanks for your kind words of wisdom 👍 1990 200tdi conversion 90
