Averages - and batteries
folk. just wondering what is typical.

I used to use the defender as an everyday motor, although I'm sure there may have been occasions when it was left for a week or so (holidays for example - although can't specifically recall) and always started.

I use the defender less so now and I'm sure if it's left more than a week it ain't going to start due to a low battery. there doesn't appear to be any significant drain on the battery so just wondering whats typical out there.

any advice, suggestions, bench marks etc welcome. Thumbs Up

Hello Caterham

I swapped out my original battery at 4years (which was good, now in the caravan)
and replaced it with a standard 90Ah LR Battery.

I've monitored it and with 'the security kit' installed I get around 3 weeks
then in winter may get a slow or non starter... I drive it almost daily when
here, but travel often so a week + unused is not untypical...

My solution after the first non start was a CTEK charger on a maintenance setting
easy to plug in with one of Martin's 13pin sockets, with the battery 'locked' away
and not easily accessible, this for me is now simple Thumbs Up

Like X4SKP I plug a Ctek charger in via the 13 pin tow socket when it's parked in the garage, that way you never have to worry about starting it after it has been parked up for any length of time. Defender 90XS SW

Is taking a fully charged spare battery with you when parked in an Airport's long stay carpark too much... Question

I've thought a few times about a twin battery set up but I have 'other stuff' in there now so not a straight
forward rework for me, and being a 90 space is at a premium in the back.

My neighbour though I was selling the Defender when he saw me installing an external electrical hook up point... Shocked SKIP

I have fond memories of the simple days, 2 1/4 petrol & a starting handle.

In my works car park after a shift, there were always people willing to do the cranking as they had never seen it done before and wanted to have a try.

Technology is not always better.

I have 130 TD5 and Discovery 2 TD5 and no problems with starting after 2-4 weeks of not using it. There is no reason for non starting car, after just few weeks. Check for current consumption of car - it should be very low - less than 1mA. When it is over 10 mA, you should look for reason. Tipical problems are additionall electronic equipment like radio, CB, phone charger ... all using some small current in OFF state. Some older radios od CB were more than 10 mA, ant it is too much.
There is some automotive standard for this, and it states, that it should be lower than approx. 0,5 mA.
Another think to check is the battery itself - it should be good enough to start the car 2 months after full charge. Bad batteries have often high internall discharge ratio - they are loosing energy inside.
And last think - it is good idea to charge te battery before long storage of car. Storing car with partly discharged battery is not the best idea. Not this winter, but dischaged lead acid battery can freeze at -5°C, charged one wistands -30°C or lower. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Supercat just brought back memories of the last new car we bought with a starting handle. It was a Citroen 2CV and it was 1990. Was this the last production car supplied with a starting handle? (Sorry to sabotage a serious thread about batteries but someone has to keep old school technology alive Embarassed ) Defender 90XS SW

I had the same problem so I changed the battery, after that I have had no problems. I then put the original battery on my 1944 Morris C8 and it lasts for months without being used or recharged.

i had a similar issue where if i didn't use the LR for 2-3 weeks then it would be too flat to start.
I had the option to either buy a new battery or buy a CTEK charger.

I bought the CTEK, and put it in recovery mode; and it fixed the battery.
Still on the old battery 2 years later, keep in on the CTEK when not needed - it always starts on the button, and when i go out for the day starts every time even after a few start stops etc.

Try the CTEK and see how you go. Thumbs Up

2 1/4 diesel was a different matter though Rolling with laughter if you could actually start it you broke your wrist Whistle

I’ve only ever been able to start 2ltr Petrol on the series 1 with the handle. We did used to start a 1928 Gardner diesel Scammell with a rope and a couple of volunteers. Formerly mao99999

Just replaced the original battery (2007) , used every other day, maybe 25 to 50km trips, started to be a bit slow to turnover recently. It's been 0 at night which does not help. Gets left at the airport up to 3 weeks but its warmer there, small solar panel plugged into the rear power socket seems to help. Very sunny down here.

first battery lasted 4 years with intermittent use, after 3 weeks it wouldn't start, new battery going strong at 5 years old but I learnt my lesson and brought a Ctek when I brought the new battery, I now put it charge whenever I know it will be standing for more than 1 week. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

My 110 came to me with a new battery almost three years ago and only now it feels sluggish if parked for over a week or so. Answer CTEK charger via externally mounted 'comfort' connector. I also have the benefit of the LED lights showing the status externally when not connected
