I absolutely know what you mean about passing burning smells and thinking that they may be emanating from your own car !

You’re probably right , I ought to start undoing bits , luckily the pre vibration list is smaller than the post vibration list !

I’ve tried dropping the props in turn and it does improve things but it didn’t matter which one, they both had the same result https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

Dropping the props my next port of call would be to remove the half-shafts to prevent each diff from spinning (you'd still have to lock the centre diff then). The rear is easy to do, the front not quite so much.

Looking through your list of things done which you think might have cause it:
- Prop shafts: suspicious, have you had a chat with Gwyn? The fact that it's made it worse implies the problem was there before and Gwyn's not really known for making bad stuff.
- Transfer box: Did Ashcroft's do the build?
- Front & Rear Diff: Who did the build?
- Driveshafts & CVs: What brand?
- Assumed you used Timken bearings and have checked for play / tightness?
- Brake pads - unlikely to cause an issue if they're not rubbing / getting hot but I might be wrong
- Transfer box mounts: They haven't been overtightened / or the rubber's too stiff?

Any chance of getting a clip / video of the sounds?

I'm not sure why but I'm leaning towards something attached to the props. Adding Gwyn's props may have just meant it's slightly more out of balance than the previous propshafts. The reason I ask about who built the diffs is because I have a friend who has had a number of diffs built by Ashcrofts themselves and had issues, I've also heard similar stories from other people, long and short of it Nige @ Xcess 4x4 is the person to go to for diffs. In fact a friend who knows Dave Ashcroft and Nige well said recently that Ashcrofts are actually pushing diff work Nige's way rather than doing it themselves. Having said that I'd be very surprised if both diffs are suffering the same issue - if as you say it doesn't change removing a prop. It's not guaranteed to hide the issue - just unlikely.

Which makes me think that it's bearing / hub end or transfer box related if it is drive-line related at all. Ed

I've tried eliminating the rear diff by removing the driveshafts and locking T_box and it improved in the same way that removing the prop did , I can therefore assume that it is not a rear diff issue.
As you suggest , the front is not really an option to remove the driveshafts but I did try with hub flanges removed whilst on axle stands, that made no difference.


All of the below have been replaced since I've had these reverberating issues , so it would be an utter coincidence of replacing one bad part with another , although I know it does happen !

- Prop shafts:
I've spoken with Gwyn and he's adament that they leave the shop perfectly balanced, really nice chap and very helpful. They are however twice the weight of the standard ones !

- Transfer box: Did Ashcroft's do the build?
yes ashcroft built the box, I am suspicious of it as it seems stiff to engage diff lock and to turn props by hand , let alone against each other , I've put this down to the ATB

- Front & Rear Diff: Who did the build?
Maltings offroad supplied but I dont' know their source

- Driveshafts & CVs: What brand?
Bearmach

- Assumed you used Timken bearings and have checked for play / tightness?
yes Timken and no play anywhere, seem perfect.

- Brake pads - unlikely to cause an issue if they're not rubbing / getting hot but I might be wrong
Pads are all rubbing when on axle stands but not obvious on the road or getting hot


- Transfer box mounts: They haven't been overtightened / or the rubber's too stiff?

Is the front prop double cardan?

Pumas suffer with front prop angles causing vibration because of the angle of the engine /gearbox relative to the axle Thumbs Up

No it’s standard height , although if double Cardon props weren’t quite so expensive I’d give it a go !

I would be thinking wheels/tyres, warped brake disks, propshafts.

Can you borrow known good wheels/tyres? Or maybe eliminate one by one by using your spare?
Propshafts you can eliminate one by one and drive in difflock
Discs, you will feel/hear thing under braking > 110 XS Double Cab

I have an ATB in the TC and noticed more effort to spin the prop flanges than a standard box. This was when the box was on the bench.
Difflock on mine is ok, I needed to adjust it so stayed in but other than that OK. 1999 Defender TD5 110

I think its the design of the ATB. I am sure I discussed this with Ashcrofts and its as they by design. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Agreed , I don’t think it is but daft not to try !

Just had it up on axle stands and noticed that when the engine was running and gearbox in neutral , the wheels were turning very slowly . I could stop them by hand .
I’m imagining this is simply fluid in the gearbox applying pressure to the gears etc !

That seems a bit odd to me. I can't see an actual reason why a gearbox in neutral would cause the output shaft to spin. Wonder if one of the shafts could be bent / misaligned.

If swapping wheels doesn't help then maybe removing the PTO cover, transfer box in neutral and gearbox in neutral. Can you spin the PTO shaft by hand freely, are there any tight spots. Maybe try the same then in all the gears. Ed
