Indicator assy to steering column clamp | |
The clamp on mine has broken, and has been for quite some time so the whole assembly is in place but a bit loose.
I can only but imagine this is due to age and fatigue as I have never touched it since new and certainly not over tightened the clamp screw.
These aren't safety critical fixings as such, so is there a torque setting for the screw for this for the indicator stalk assemby?
And also for the screws / bolts that attach the horn stalk to this assembly?
Looking through the WSM, I couldn't see any mention of a torque setting for that indicator stalk to steering column clamp.
So I am assuming it's manual common sense calibrated tightening.
I find it rather curious that a plastic strap clamp, with plastic threads was used with a metal fixing in this instance.
Surely a metal clamp strap embedded or affixed to the indicator assembly would have been better - and then I wouldn't have had the issue I've had if that was the design.
But seeing as LR are charging upwards of Β£150 per component for Lucas parts of around Β£40 each I suppose they didn't particularly worry about them not lasting.
I have a full set of brand new Lucas parts to replace all components on the shelf ready to go, Headlight switch, indicator stalk & horn stalk.
All of them that are currently fitted are working but worn now.
I managed to find info on torque settings for the column shroud screws, lower dash binnacle fascia etc.
(Of which the latter doesn't need to come off for this job.)
But I couldn't find any info on the fixings for the headlight switch, indicator stalk or horn assembly.
I can only but assume there isn't any, but I thought I'd post up here just in case.
After all the LR WSM's have been known to have their flaws occasionally.
I have the torque setting for the steering wheel centre nut, and I am aware of the the trick regarding leaving nut on partially etc.
That'll be fun to remove I expect.
If anyone has any info I'd be grateful, if there isn't any torque settings I'll just use my own judgement.

I have always just very lightly nipped up the indicator clamp screw - the clamp has been breaking for the last 35 years so why should landrover have redesigned it
The column shrouds were redesigned slightly towards the end of the defender - they used to have steel threaded inserts in the top half and machine screws but they were changed to self tappers straight into the plastic - either to save money or sometimes the inserts used to come loose and just turn in the shroud.

I would say the shroud thread was an improvement.
Grateful for small mercies I suppose. ____\We|Will|Win/___
