Sqeaky brakes (again) and any upgrades on Brake worth it?
Since owning my Puma now over 4 years Its had some brakes and pads in my ownership.

Its also had a couple of calipers replaced.

Recently its started squeaking, more so first think in the morning and genrally goes away but noticed its coming back a bit more..

Currently I have cross drilled Terafarma? front discs with Mintex 128-FD?

Can I upgrade, change anything else to makes them slightly better? (and not squeak)

Is it worth upgrading the brake pipes? or the calipers? without going for the Big brake conversion ?

Any recomendations appreciated

Thumbs Up

Watching this with interest, as my dealer commented last week on the service the discs all round are starting to lip but servicable for the next 10k.

Rather know which why to go than make a panic decision when forced. 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

Likewise mine likes an occasional squeak first thing. I’ve always put it down to wet/damp brakes.

On a related topic the family wagon (Discovery Sport) is due its first MOT in a few months time. One of the rear disks has rust on it that has worn away a line in the pad. It does not impact its braking as far as I can tell. Im assuming that’s will be an MOT fail??? Any thoughts?

Only thing that has ever stopped Defender brakes squealing for me has been original Land Rover pads. That’s why I will only fit them now.

I use EBC green stuff pads, absolutely great stopping power. Smooth progression and not snatchy.
I also have grooved discs, had drilled vented ones but had one shatter once during heave braking with trailer on the back, ripped off calliper in the process and chewed a boost alloy too!
Grooved ones have been fantastic so far. Hold my beer and watch this!

as discs wear they can create a radius on the edge of the disc. This can cause it to squeak.

Land Rover very thoughtfully have the minimum allowable thickness of the disc, either stamped into the rim of the disc or cast into the central, unwiped, part of the disc It is not a Defender, it is a One_Ten

Never been able to read them as writing normally rusted over, too much road salt up here. You know disc is too thin when you hit it with a hammer and it falls off the hub whilst still bolted on. Very Happy

Brembo pads + Mintex anti squeel compound. Never had a squeek or squeel.

Slotted discs are worth it if you drive hard/tow otherwise not. Drilled can crack and get damaged off road.

The amount of wear allowed is surprisingly little.
I fitted a new pair of discs (rear) a couple of months ago and a new disc is 14mm thick. The wear limit is 13mm so basically the discs should be changed pretty much every time you change the pads. It is not a Defender, it is a One_Ten

I've just gone through some invoices

Looks like I have Terrafirma discs (front) sloted and vented with Mintex pads...

The rears although are fairly new have not found yet and its from the back the squeak is coming from Smile

When I bought new discs all round, the lads at Devon 4X4 recommended not to go with drilled or grooved as they just fill with mud when off roading. Copper slip on the rear of the pads and I never have squeaking.
