2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 HT Stornoway Grey

Hard top to windows

Fancying converting from a van to windows... just really prefer the look

no chairs or anything;

I've been given a price for sides, windows and seals about 900 does that sound right? (used obviously)

Anything else ill need apart from interior trim? Seals to the roof / tub?

Could you not just get the jigsaw out and cut the windows into your existing sides? Perhaps there isn’t enough structural integrity if you do this?

You can buy the window kits to fit your hard top. Just a case of measuring many times before you cut!
Substantially cheaper than 900 Hold my beer and watch this!

If you don't want rear seats, you might want to consider fixed glass instead of sliding windows - all the visual benefits without the drafts, rattling and corroding catches. Darren

More than 5 years ago now I bought a van and had it converted from no windows to windows - it was off to Switzerland with me so side windows were essential to see the traffic at junctions.

And it has turned out brilliant back in UK also. Would absolutely recommend.
Also I added side facing dicky seats for the grandkids on short journeys. Also brilliant. All reinforced underneath and for a 15kg object at 30mph as sound as any other restraint, calculations done.

Insurance hasn't really been a bother, lots of time on the phone initially getting them to accept the mods, then routine renewals ... except that the company bless 'em keeps changing the category from car to van and back again. But all good and 5-6 years down the track the windows are still 100% sound and waterproof.

Gumtree4x4 did the work for me as it was close to Gatwick and good the the Swiss commute, not real close for you tho

Sold the much modified 110 2.8, in Oz
Brought the 90 home from Switzerland ...

Hmm

I’m really against the cutting method and would rather just put them into storage as genuine good condition panels for the future if need ever arises...

I too would like the blind spot visibility as so many times it’s awkward.

I take it isn’t too much of a massive job?

It's a straightforward day long nuts and bolts job to change the hardtop sides if you are just swapping them.
A couple of extra pairs of hands would be essential.
I would recommend new seals whilst you are about it.

1994 Defender 110 300 Tdi CSW Alpine White

One thing to consider possibly is "security".

I went the opposite way (well on a 110 from a CSW to USW) for two main reasons. The first being that I've got a set of L322 seats fitted in mine which meant that the rear seats needed a latch fabricated to hold the backs in place, the latch was halfway through the rear windows. Changing to van sides from a Series vehicle meant I could do this easily and look half decent. The other reason was that I do a lot of shooting and with windows in the back (and no load-space cover like most vehicles) then everything is on display. I also tinted the rear window quite heavily (can't see out of it anyway with the L322 seats as they are) so now I've got an enclosed boot space that nosy people can't see in to.

But being a 110 I've still got the second row doors for extra visibility at junctions. Ed

I've managed to purchase a set of genuine 90 panels with glass / seals from a 16 plate car...

Is it as simple as it sounds? does the roof need to come off or can you just support the weight of it?

bit of a project on my hands, I rarely leave anything value in the back of the truck only thing is i need to relocate hte Hertz HDp1 and HDP4 amps that where mounted on the van panels...

Maybe build something like this? I have a Hertz 380D - 15" sub in the rear amps either side sub in the middle?

There is no need to remove the roof, if you have something to support the weight of the roof panel whilst you remove the sides.
Have done it several times on both 110 hardtop and 110 CSW It is not a Defender, it is a One_Ten

Hopefully it won’t b too bad, the car is garaged most of its life and does 3k miles a year
