Lack of heat... :-(
Recently a lack of heat from the heater. Lots of flow and max movement on the heater hot/cold lever at the heater box end. Also temperature lever moves full distance at the heater box.

Got the thermostat replaced with a gen LR item and that appeared to help but as the temperature has got lower the new 'stat hasn't really helped.

Coolant level is OK.

If I leave the heater off for a while and then turn the heater on, I get a warm blast of air which then drops off to cooler air.

Next move I think is to either replace the heater matrix or water pump?

Unless I am missing something else? 1999 Defender TD5 110

I don't like scaremongering, but those were the exact symptoms I had before I diagnosed my head gasket failure. Or more precisely discovered that my 15p engine had 10p plastic dowels - causing head float and therefore head gasket failure type symptoms.

I changed the water pump first, it was fine. I replaced the thermostat, that was fine.

Try removing the jubilee clip off the heater matrix when the engine is running and see if you get air out, by pulling the rubber hose back past the barb on the heater matrix pipe.

Mine was getting combustion gasses in the coolant, this was causing an airlock to gather at the highest point in the coolant system (the heater matrix) so no /little heat.

Definitely change the water pump first though, it's possible that it's failing /wearing out. Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I hope its not the head as this was replaced with a brand new AMC head around 6 years ago.
I have not replaced the water pump and I have owned the car for 8 ish years and has done 225k so maybe.... 1999 Defender TD5 110

How is a 15P a 15P if it has 10P plastic dowels?

Mine is a very early 15p, typical landrover must have used what they had to hand when building my engine. Installed with plastic dowels. Its the original engine and definitely a 15p. It has the external fuel return and green top injectors. (not to forget the 15p engine number).

When I got it from a landrover main dealer it had a full service history and I requested a warranty work report. The engine had never been touched other than servicing Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I did yes, no problems since. Although it lasted 125k miles before giving any trouble. Done about 15k miles on the new head with metal dowels. No problems so far Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I have always found this with our TD5. Use of the heater on full before the engine is upto temp means it takes forever to warm up in cool weather. Sometimes it even cools the engine back down again!

I find it quite funny that the TD5 heater is so terrible at heating the car, but actually quite effective at cooling the engine! Rolling with laughter

Is your viscous fan rotating freely with the engine off (i.e. not seizing up and overcooling the radiator)

Just take the fan off. I don’t think it does much unless you are towing 3500 kg anyway!

Mines off, but I don’t think it makes much difference to warm up time....

Is there a method of checking the water pump? I was thinking remove the bleed screw and see if water jet pops out? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Did you have heat before? (And... before what you ask?). Did you do anything to the cooling system recently?

If so you may well have an air lock... my heater has been pumping scalding hot air for years. I find the Td5 better than previous versions. 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

I did have heat but over time I think its cooled down a bit and then over summer never really noticed/needed heat. Got the thermostat replaced the other week and better heat was back. But as weather got cooler, I don't have much, certainly not as good as it once was.

Not changed anything for a while on the cooling other than recent thermostat. 1999 Defender TD5 110
