BODY UNDER DEFENDER
Following the surprise of returning to my car in a Tesco car park and finding a chap underneath. He said he was retrieving a dropped letter which was not evident and neither did he look like a scholar or indeed a person of even moderate linguistic skills , as all the words he used seemed to start with F. I bought from a kind chap on here a cable to reposition my alarm as I was informed that this was a good move . I understand that it is good practise to leave the old cable in place, but due to my advanced years I have mislaid the instruction of what to do with the repositioning cable. My search on here has not helped either.
Would one of the knowledgeable and kind people on here please tell me what to do with this BBUS ? cable and the alarm to increase the security of my vehicle, which ,I must admit I am getting a bit worried about using and leaving anywhere these days. This does rather spoil the joys of ownership. I would check everything underneath just in case. Maybe Hollywood only but GPS trackers are so cheap these days, has he stuck one one to locate where it's parked over night ?

Do you mean the BBUS cable or battery to fuse box cable? It's the latter that is vulnerable to attach from underneath.

The BBUS is typically located behind one of the headlights and the relocation cable allows it to re-positioned elsewhere in the engine bay.

The battery to fuse box cable runs underneath the seat box and the relocation cable for that moves it inside. I've installed the latter and you can see some detail here:

Yeah, that's the BBUS cable for use in the engine bay. Darren

It's been reported that trackers have been used at shows to track the vehicle for stealing later. I'd have a good check, just to be safe.

BBUS and earth cable relocation both worth doing.

Any chance Tesco have CCTV footage, to try reporting to Police? James

That about sums it up doesn’t it! Seemingly the adage of “prevention is better than cure” hasn’t reached the police yet.

check for a tracker or anything odd tied or stuck underneath string etc anything hanging down that is not normal . its been known that cars have been marked in many way does not have to be a tracker

This may sound completely nuts, but on checking underneath, I found nothing there that I did not expect to see, but it looks like an attempt was made to saw through the exhaust ? No real damage but clean saw cuts showing shiney on the dull exhaust, not deep but just starter strokes.
I would not have thought that the cost of a section of exhaust was that expensive ,nor worth the risk in a supermarket car park. But am I missing something here, was he planning on stealing the car and leaving the exhaust Rolling with laughter
My steering wheel was off and replaced with the Optimil dome so unlikely i would have thought.
Lucky as I only went back to the car as I forgot my store points card! 1983 Series 3 Pick up in Marine Blue

If it has a catalytic convertor they were probably after that.

Hello Swine&Small

Clearly sounds suspicious.

My first thoughts too were that a tracker had been attached, and it still might have,
look on all the steel bits as these are typically attached by magnets.

If as you say the exhausts shows signs of 'new / clean' saw marks, it would be somewhat unusual to attempt this
after you have just arrived and the 'opportunist' thief has a hot exhaust to contend with + a less than ideal spot,
catalytic converters are a known theft problem but is this the case here ?

Maybe worth asking to view the supermarket CCTV and take a view as to if covered how suspicious it all looks.

Hope it's nothing... SKIP

Brave (more stupid!) trying something like this in a Tesco car park, very likely to be caught by the owner who could return any minute! Plus lots of other people around to see.

I guess as an opportunist, that's how they would operate then make silly excuses if they are caught or just leg it!

There was nothing conclusive from Tesco as they said I had parked at the far reach of there system and their images we not really identifiable . checked the underside again on a local garage's ramp and nothing there
As mentioned before, police do not have the resources so no real deterrent to the opportunistic thief so it is a win/win situation.
I had only driven a couple of miles to Tesco before going on,so a hot exhaust not really a problem.
Maybe I was followed ! Scary thought that, so must not let my imagination take over.
