It is a bit more involved. There are threads on here about installing the socket - the main issus is running a cable from the battery to the socket

see some threads here

Yep hardest part of the 13pin install was finding a nice route for the battery charge feed......

Is the 13 pin a better plug and socket arrangement than the old style?

The 13 pin socket is a far better quality connection.

The relay and battery connection on the 13 pin and 12S genuine electrics is actually for the ignition feed for the socket, not the permanent feed.

There is a also an extra ground wire fitted to the chassis rail near the battery box too.

The permanent feed to the tow socket is supplied from the grey 9 pin plug in the rear wheelarch behind the flap.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

In the sense its only one unit and very compact plus most more modern stuff uses these anyhows so it was far easier for me personally
I do have an older car transport trailer which means on the odd occasion I use it I simply have a convertor lead

+1 for this tow electric charger adapter from the DEFENDER2.NET shop.

I use it with the genuine LR tow electrics and it is charging fine while my vehicle is locked. I have a dual battery setup and I can hear the charging relay clicking automatically to charge the aux battery when the main is full. It also came with a nice reminder card. I have driven my other car away before without disconnecting the charger. luckily, I've installed a magnetic connection for the charger on that car so nothing really was damaged. Mr. Green

So if I only wanted to use the 13 pin socket for just towing a trailer and for battery charging could I avoid running the 1.extra cable to the battery box 2.connecting the additional chassis earth 3. fitting the relay and connecting to the ignition feed in the dash ?

Ianh- did you ever get answer to this question? Can’t see me ever getting a caravan so don’t need the full functionality of the 13 pin electrics but do quite fancy this as a method of charging/battery maintenance whilst the vehicle is locked up. Been trying to investigate other exterior connection options but this seems the neatest solution.

No, but still interested if someone knows Very Happy

I ended up taking the 13amp extension lead into the vehicle via a slightly open rear window with the gap sealed by using 22mm copper pipe insulation cut to size with a small notch cut in it for the cable. The insulation is partially pre slit along its length, ready to be fully opened if needed, I opened that slit and slotted the top of the window glass into it , cutting a small notch in the top of the pipe insulation to accommodate the mains extension cable. Then wound the window up tight leaving the mains socket on vehicle floor.

Then I placed the Ctek charger on vehicle floor and connected to the mains socket and battery.
Once done I central lock the car with the remote as usual and it does not set off the alarm as the pipe insulation stops air ingress. Then switch on the mains.

That way the charger can’t be stolen if you charge while on the drive and everything is all nice and dry as it’s inside the vehicle which is locked and alarmed.

A simple low cost but effective solution.

To answer the question very late (sorry I didn’t see it before) - yes the forward branch is only for the ignition supply. For basic trailer signal lamps and charging through the socket it isn’t needed.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I take a mains extension lead into the front passenger footwell simply by closing the door on it, the fit of Defender doors making this possible without cable damage. The charger is the in plain sight so driving off with the cable in place isn't a risk. As long as the charger and mains socket aren't left on the floor it's even safe in the rain. Laughing
