What's the Verdict?
I acquired this on the way home from Somerset whilst towing a 14ft trailer with a car on it!

The bolt has gone right through. The local tyre place insisted it could not be repaired as it is so close to the edge. What's the verdict? I

Personally I’d try another tyre place, or Swap it with the spare. It’ll be fine as a get you home spare tyre. Tyres have come a long way in recent years and punctures are almost a thing of the past, so you’d probably never need to use it. I can’t remember the last time I had a puncture. I can't see how any tyre repair place can tell you that without taking the tyre off the rim - I'd find somewhere that will do that & see what they say once they can see the inside of the tyre.

That's more or less the exact location I had a tyre cut that ruined the tyre.
As it is, it's not legal nor repairable as it's the tread edge / sidewall.

The only area repairable is the central area of the tread 3/4 width or similar rings a bell.

I'd just stick the spare on for now, then you can go from there. Thumbs Up Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️

BS AU 159 is the British Standard that covers road vehicle tyre repairs.

The standard limits puncture repairs on car tyres to 6mm diameter (at the end of the penetration)

And acceptable repair zones (measured centrally on from the tyre centreline):
Up to and including 155 section width - 60%
Above 155-200 section width - 65%
Above 200 section width - 70%

So nowhere should be repairing a tyre if these conditions arn't met.

Get the tape measure out and see what you think

If it is 6mm or less, you could try one of those £6.00 tyre repair kits from fleebay.

Do a search for tyre repair kit.

We used the same kit on a Mitsubishi 4x4 tyre at our sailing club and it worked really well.

I would keep it as a spare though, rather than run on it permanently, just in case the sidewall has got damaged internally.

See if there are any Vulcanisers in your area, they would be able to sort out that type of damage easy. I have had worse damage than that nail repaired via vulcanising, It is a safe and durable way of fixing a puncture repair by applying a patch, welding the new and old rubber together to bond. Tyre vulcanising repair can be implemented on any tyre including sidewalls, shoulder and tyre tread surface.

If there are none available in your area it is possible to send a tyre to a further afield vulcaniser via a carrier For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

As it’s a Continental cross contact there must be loads of half worn or spares knocking around, probably cheaper than having it repaired.

Don't want to skimp on a bad fix or have any reason to think as your driving along on wet dark motorway that I hope that tyre is ok...


Tyres / Brakes / Suspension the things that keep your car on the road imho not worth a risk.

Fair comment- even a "get you home" spare can burst with disastrous consequences- I've bitten the bullet and shelled for a new tyre.
